    Description: This paper deals with two hand-held antenna types operating with geostationary and medium earth orbit (GEO and MEO) satellite systems. They could be applied to the low earth orbit (LEO) and highly elliptical orbit (HEO) systems respectively doing the appropriate frequency scale designs. The first one is a lambda/2 (1/2 turn) quadrifilar helix (quasi-hemispherical coverage), and the second one is a self-diplexed antenna made of a circular patch and a short-circuited ring patch in stacked configuration (zenithal coverage).

    Description: Preliminary results from an experimental study of the smolder characteristics of a porous combustible material (flexible polyurethane foam) in normal and microgravity are presented. The experiments, limited in fuel sample size and power available for ignition, show that the smolder process was primarily controlled by heat losses from the reaction to the surrounding environment In microgravity, the reduced heat losses due to the absence of natural convection result in only slightly higher temperatures in the quiescent microgravity test than in normal gravity, but a dramatically larger production of combustion products in all microgravity tests. Particularly significant is the proportionately larger amount of carbon monoxide and light organic compounds produced in microgravity, despite comparable temperatures and similar char patterns. This excessive production of fuel-rich combustion products may be a generic characteristic of smoldering polyurethane in microgravity, with an associated increase in the toxic hazard of smolder in spacecraft.

    Description: The geometric phases for dynamical processes where the evolution operator becomes the identity (evolution loops) are studied. The case of time-independent Hamiltonians with equally spaced energy levels is considered; special emphasis is made on the potentials having the same spectrum as the harmonic oscillator potential (the generalized oscillator potentials) and their recently found coherent states.

    Description: A research program to study smoldering combustion with emphasis on the design of an experiment to be conducted in the space shuttle was conducted at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of California, Berkeley. The motivation of the research is the interest in smoldering both as a fundamental combustion problem and as a serious fire risk. Research conducted included theoretical and experimental studies that have brought considerable new information about smolder combustion, the effect that buoyancy has on the process, and specific information for the design of a space experiment. Experiments were conducted at normal gravity, in opposed and forward mode of propagation and in the upward and downward direction to determine the effect and range of influence of gravity on smolder. Experiments were also conducted in microgravity, in a drop tower and in parabolic aircraft flights, where the brief microgravity periods were used to analyze transient aspects of the problem. Significant progress was made on the study of one-dimensional smolder, particularly in the opposed-flow configuration. These studies provided enough information to design a small-scale space-based experiment that was successfully conducted in the Spacelab Glovebox in the June 1992 USML-1/STS-50 mission of the Space Shuttle Columbia.

    Description: This article describes measurements made at all three Deep Space Network 70-m S-band polarization diverse (SPD) systems to determine and eliminate the cause of the 1-K elevation in follow-up noise temperature in the listen-only mode of the SPD systems at DSS 43 and DSS 63. The system noise temperatures obtained after finding and correcting the cause of the elevated follow-up noise temperature are also reported.

    Description: A peculiarity of the pulsed laser deposition technique of thin-film growth which limits its applicability is the very rapid drop of resulting film thickness as a function of distance from the deposition axis. This is due to the narrow forward peaking of the emission plume characteristic of the laser ablation process. The plume is usually modeled by a cos(sup n) theta function with n greater, and in some cases, much higher, than 1. Based on this behavior, a method is presented to substantially enhance coverage uniformity in substrate zones of the order of the target-substrate distance h, and to within a specified thickness tolerance. Essentially, target irradiation is caused to form an annular emission source instead of the usual spot. By calculating the resulting thickness profiles, an optimum radius s is found for the annular source, corresponding to a given power in the emission characteristic and a given value of h. The radius of this annulus scales with h. Calculated numerical results for optimal s/h ratios corresponding to a wide range of values for n are provided for the case of +/- 1% tolerance in deviation from the thickness at deposition axis. Manners of producing annular illumination of the target by means of conic optics are presented for the case of a laser beam with radially symmetric profile. The region of uniform coverage at the substrate can be further augmented by extension of the method to multiple concentric annular sources. By using a conic optic of novel design, it is shown also how a single-laser beam can be focused onto a target in the required manner. Applicability of the method would be limited in practice by the available laser power. On the other hand, the effective emitting area can be large, which favors extremely high growth rates, and since growth can occur uniformly over the whole substrate for each laser pulse, single-shot depositions with substantial thicknesses are possible. In addition, the simultaneity of growth over the complete substrate is desirable when monitoring the growth in situ.

In original application, apparatus operates mostly unattended aboard spacecraft; potential terrestrial applications include automated or semiautomated diagnosis of pathological tissues in clinical laboratories, biomedical instrumentation, monitoring of biological process streams, and portable instrumentation for testing biological conditions in various environments. Offers obvious advantages over present laboratory instrumentation.
