Notes: Studying the amino acid absorption by higher plants we observed a stimulation of 14C-alanine absorption by wheat roots preloaded with inactive alanine. Within the limits of concentration examined the increase of stimulation is more likely to depend on the free alanine content of the roots than on the alanine concentration of the solutions used for pretreatment. The stimulation is retained even after incubating the pretreated roots in diluted CaSO4 solution before the uptake period. Besides the alanine only the glycine gave stimulation, while pretreatment with valine, arginine or aspartic acid gave an inhibition. (The aspartic acid is likely to cause a general rise in the permeability of cells.)We suppose that the phenomenon of flow driven by counterflow is likely to serve as an explanation to the stimulatory preloading effect observed in the alanine absorption by wheat roots.

Notes: Ductuli efferentes in four examined genera of family Didelphidae are organized into highly convoluted tubules, located within a conical body adjacent to the vascular plexus supplying the testis. They have yellowish-green color in the adult Didelphis virginiana and grey pink color in other genera. The ductuli efferentes in all examined animals are lined by very low columnar cells, covered by microvilli or booth cilia and microvilli.Histochemical analysis reveals several types of cytoplasmic granules in the genera examined. A single sperical body about 1.5 μ in diameter is found in epithelial cells of the four eyed opossum (genus Philander); this body stains positively for RNA and non-histone protein, and appears granular under the electron microscope, without a limiting membrane. Abundant cytoplasmic bodies in the Virginia opossum show strong reactions for SH groups; these granules may be responsible for the green color of the ductuli in this species. Ultrastructural studies show that the morphology of membrane limited granules in the ductuli of the examined genera is characteristic for each genus. Abundant pinocytotic vacuoles in the apices of these cells and a strongly positive alkaline phosphatase reaction suggest a marked absorptive activity of epithelial cells.

Notes: Colloidal microcrystalline cellulose, introduced in 1961, now is a successful commercial product with growing world-wide markets. This paper describes some major findings of our continuing research to convert fibrous or fiber-forming polymer systems into new colloidal microcrystalline physical states without going through a homogeneous molecular solution phase. Several novel microcrystalline colloidal products from the following natural and/or synthetic polymeric raw materials are described and compared for the first time: cellulose, amylose, collagen, nylon, and chrysotile mineral silicates. Many previously unpublished electron micrographs are presented. These products demonstrate a new and growing field of colloidal microcrystalline polymer science. They open up increasing opportunities for new polymer products based on the original concept, namely, the unhinging of polymer microcrystals from their natural or synthetic network and then by appropriate mechanical energy, releasing them as discrete, submicron colloidal polymer microcrystals dispersed in various liquid media to form unique gel systems, or reaggregated in the dry state to form porous colloidal particles.

Notes: The effect of spermine upon the denaturation temperature (Tm) of DNA's of various base compositions has been found to depend upon both the base composition of the DNA and the pH of the solution. Measurement of the hydrogen ion titration curve of spermine as a function of temperature reveals that the net charge of the spermine molecule is undergoing a rapid change with temperature in the range of temperatures at which DNA denatures. Since the value of Tm depends upon base composition, the correlation of the effect of spermine upon Tm with the base composition of the DNA used may be explainable in terms of the changing degree of ionization of spermine. The binding of spermine to native DNA has also been studied by dialysis equilibrium. There is no significant variation either in the number of strongly binding sites or strength of binding with base composition. It is concluded that there is no evidence of correlation between the binding of spermine and the base composition of DNA.
