    Notes: Some earlier observations on the influence of molecular weight, plasticizer, and irradiation on the thermal conductivity of polymers is reviewed. Also some new data on polystyrene and some new calculations based on the theory of Hansen and Ho are presented. These data show almost a two fold increase in the thermal conductivity of polystyrene as the molecular weight goes from 900 to 100,000. Data on the moleculer weight effect on thermal conductivity appear to be consistent with the theoretical calculations.

    Notes: The starch-polyacrylonitrile graft copolymer prepared from gelatinized wheat starch with ceric ammoninm nitrate as the initiator has been freed of ungrafted polyacrylonitrile and separated into fractions by extraction with dimethylformamide, γ-butyrolactone, and dimethyl sulfoxide. The copolymer fractions obtained differed appreciably in level of add-on, molecular weights of grafted chains, and grafting frequency. To determiue the molecular weights of grafted chains, the starch part of the copolymer was effectively removed by hydrolysis with α-amylase. It was necessary to dissolve or swell the polymer in dimethyl sulfoxide and freshly precipitate it by addition to water before enzymatic hydrolysis. In studying the effect of reaction medium on copolymer composition, there was less ungrafted homopolymer formed and a higher yield of graft copolymer possessing more frequent grafts with water than with aqueous dimethylformamide or aqueous ethylene glycol. Polymer solubility, the results of control polymerizations of acrylonitrile in the absence of starch, and the detection of glucose endgroups on the polyacrylonitrile liberated from the fractionated polymer by hydrolysis are presented as evidence that the copolymers obtained are true grafts rather thau intimate mixtures.

    Notes: A method is reviewed which allows data points to be chosen in such a fashion that precise estimates of the parameters in nonlinear reaction rate models can be obtained. This method allows each future data point to be selected such that the confidence region of the estimated parameters is smaller with it than with any other possible data point within the region of experimentation. This procedure is applied for Hougen-Watson models with hypothetical experimental data which were generated with the guidance of an example from the current chemical engineering literature. It is found that, for the same number of data points, the parameters in the model can be estimated eighteen times more precisely by using this suggested experimental design than by another commonly used design. Confidence regions are presented for the parameters of the Hougen-Watson models with two types of designs.It is found that the positions of the data points in the well-designed experiments are more sensitive to the functional form of the model than to the current estimates of the magnitudes of the parameter values.

    Notes: The factors affecting the efficacy of a closely packed bed of mixed cotton and a supporting fiber (Teflon, glass, Dynel) were evaluated for oil-in-water dispersions. Several other water-organic systems were also tested. Superficial velocities ranged from 0.2 to 3.5 ft./min. Successful coalescence was attained at interfacial tensions as low as 3.5 dynes/cm. Dispersed phase viscosity was varied form 1.4 to 137 centipoise. For a mixed-fiber bed with a specific ratio of fiber species, there is an optimum bed depth for best performance. High-speed cinephotomicrographic observations at 100 × and up to 4,000 frames/sec. indicated that fiber wettability is not the most important factor for successful operation.

    Notes: Studies were carried out on the grafting of acrylonitrile (AN) and acrylamide (AA) to starch by ceric ion. The variables affecting the grafting of AN and AA were investigated with granular wheat starch dispersed in aqueous N,N-dimethylformamide and ceric ammonium nitrate as catalyst. Results showed that the concentrations of monomer and catalyst are the major factors influencing the grafting of AN; thus the monomer content of the grafts can be regulated by these variables. The grafting of AA is also influenced by these variables, but to a much less degree. Increasing concentrations of monomer promote homopolymerization and increasing concentration of catalyst inhibit grafting. The extent of grafting of this monomer can best be controlled by reaction time. Under the most favorable conditions, maximum grafting efficiency (ratio of amount of grafted monomer to total amount of monomer converted to polymer) was 87% for AN and 43.8% for AA. Although the monomer content of the AN grafts was higher than that of AA grafts prepared under identical conditions, the number of branches in the grafts was almost the same; only the length of the branches was different. The AN-starch grafts have branches of higher molecular weight.

    Notes: The induction period for the autoxidation of polypropylene increases with increasing sample thickness (from 1 to 75 mils) and with decreasing oxygen pressure. The rate of oxidation shows the opposite dependences. In contrast, neither the rate nor the induction period in well stirred oxidations of squalane is oxygen pressure-dependent. It is concluded that autoxidation of polypropylene is controlled by diffusion of oxygen into the sample.
