    Motivational Profiles in TIMSS Mathematics (2021)

    Description: This open access book presents a person-centered exploration of student profiles, using variables related to motivation to do school mathematics derived from the IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) data. Statistical cluster analysis is used to identify groups of students with similar motivational profiles, across grades and over time, for multiple participating countries. While motivational variables systematically relate to school outcomes, linear relationships can obscure the diverse makeup of student subgroups, each with varying combinations of motivation, emotions, and attitudes. In this book, a person-centered analysis of distinct and meaningful motivational profiles and their differences on sociodemographic variables and mathematics performance broadens understanding about the role that motivation characteristics play in learning and achievement in mathematics. Exploiting the richness of IEA’s TIMSS data from many countries, extracted clusters reveal consistent, as well as certain nuanced patterns that are systematically linked to sociodemographic and achievement measures. Student clusters with inconsistent motivational profiles were found in all countries; mathematics self-confidence then emerged as the variable more closely associated with average achievement. The findings demonstrate that teachers, researchers, and policymakers need to take into account differential student profiles, prioritizing techniques that target skill and competence in mathematics, in educational efforts to develop student motivation.

    Pre-Field Screening Protocols for Heat-Tolerant Mutants in Rice (2021)

    Description: This open access book presents simple, robust pre-field screening protocols that allow plant breeders to screen for enhanced tolerance to heat stress in rice. Two critical heat-sensitive stages in the lifecycle of the rice crop are targeted – the seedling and flowering stages – with screening based on simple phenotypic responses. The protocols are based on the use of a hydroponics system and/or pot experiments in a glasshouse in combination with a controlled growth chamber where the heat stress treatment is applied. The protocols are designed to be effective, simple, reproducible and user-friendly. The protocols will enable plant breeders to effectively reduce the number of plants from a few thousands to less than 100 candidate individual mutants or lines in a greenhouse/growth chamber, which can then be used for further testing and validation in the field conditions. The methods can also be used to classify rice genotypes according to their heat tolerance characteristics. Thus, different types of heat stress tolerance mechanisms can be identified, presenting opportunities for pyramiding different (mutant) sources of heat stress tolerance.

Gleichzeitig können dezentrale Ansätze zur Abflussminderung hier am meisten bewirken. Das Handbuch richtet sich vornehmlich an Ingenieure, Planer und Berater von Landwirtschaft, Kommunen und Ländlicher Entwicklung, soll aber auch Studenten und Wissenschaftlern der relevanten Fachgebiete als Informationsquelle und Nachschlagewerk dienen. Die Autoren: Dr. Simon P. Seibert ist Ingenieurökologe und hat über die Entstehung und Modellierung von Hochwasser in München und Karlsruhe promoviert. Seit Mitte 2019 leitet er der Arbeitsgruppe Gebietshydrologie am Bayerischen Landesamt für Umwelt. Prof. Dr. Karl Auerswald lehrt am Wissenschaftszentrum Weihenstephan für Ernährung, Landnutzung und Umwelt der TU München. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte der vergangenen 40 Jahre sind agrarökologische Prozesse, insbesondere der Wasserhaushalt von Landschaften, Böden, Pflanzen und Tieren.
