Notes: Summary Mixed infections of Bradyrhizobium japonicum strains in early and late nodules of four soybean cultivars were studied in a field soil. Nodule occupants were identified by immunofluorescence using serogroup specific antibodies prepared against B. japonicum strains USDA 110, USDA 123, and USDA 138. Double infection was determined directly by combined examination of the same microscopic field by fluorescence and phase contrast microscopy. Double strain occupancy was observed consistently, and its occurrence did not differ substantially in pouch, soil pot, and field experiments, ranging in incidence from 12% to 32%. No significant differences in the incidence or nature of double infection could be attributed to cultivar, seed inoculation, or plant maturity. Strains reactive to strain USDA 123-fluorescent antibody were dominant in both singly and doubly infected nodules irrespective of cultivar, plant age, or seed inoculation with strain USDA 110.

Notes: Summary A family of highly repetitive DNA elements, the Cla-elements, is present in the genomes of the two sibling speciesChironomus th. thummi andCh. th. piger. These Cla-elements are organized in large tandem repetitive clusters as well as occuring as interspersed monomeric elements, in both subspecies. The analysis of a monomeric Cla-element and several kilobases of its flanking sequences fromCh. th. piger revealed that the short Cla-elements are cotransposed together with adjacent DNA. We found the same association of Cla-elements with specific flanking DNA in clones obtained from the rDNA ofCh. th. thummi and from nonribosomal Cla-DNA ofCh. th. piger. The Cla-element-flanking DNA is clearly also repetitive, but mainly of inter-spersed organization.

Notes: Summary Two cDNA clones representing the 3′-end regions of BR1 and BR2 75S mRNA were obtained fromChironomus pallidivittatus. The regular structure characterizing the core of these genes, consisting of tandemly arranged repeat units, changes into a more irregular structure toward the 3′ end. Distal to a standard type of repeat unit with a characteristic excess of positive charges, a new type of repeat with a high, negative charge density is interspersed among parts of the standard unit. The last 111 amino acids before the stop codon represent a unique region distinctly different in amino acid composition from upstream regions, and include two partially homologous hydrophobic regions. Sequence comparison of 3′-end regions from clones representing BR1 and BR2 genes indicates striking sequence conservation in the unique part of the region. Analysis of the level of silent site divergence shows that the homology increases in the 3′ direction up to the polyadenylation site. That the unique region is retained as a part of the secreted protein is shown by Western blotting.

Notes: Abstract The chemical composition of the resin acids of the oleoresins of five species of the conifers of Transcarpathia has been studied. The oleoresins contain eight resin acids. Δ8,9-Isopimaric and anticopalic acids have been found in the acid part of the oleoresin of the Weymouth pine.

Notes: Abstract On the ozonization of larixol in methanol followed by treatment with ammonium chloride, the main reaction products were 15,16,20-trisnorlabd-6-ene-8,13-dione and 6-hydroxy-8,13;8,14-diepoxy-15,20-bisnorlabd-14-one. When ozonization was performed in methanol in the presence of dimethyl sulfide or in methylene chloride in the presence of pyridine, 6,14-dihydroxy-8,13;8,14-diepoxy-15,20-bisnorlabdane and 6-hydroxy-14,50,20-trisnorlabd-8,13-dione predominated in the reaction products.

Notes: A computation method for the inverse design of supercritical cascades is described. It yields the flow field and the cascade geometry for a prescribed velocity distribution, which may be optimized by boundary-layer calculation. Some developments of the method for convenient application and high accuracy - automatic tuning of the upstream boundary distributions, local mesh refinement with emboxed regions for high resolution of steep gradients - are shown. Comparison between calculation and experiment of the complete flow field is made for a supercritical nozzle flow, and comparison with another method for a turbine cascade. A supercritical compressor cascade and blades for a three-stage axial compressor have been designed. They produced lower losses and higher efficiency in comparison with conventional NACA blades.

Notes: Abstract Photoabsorption, photoelectron, and ejected electron spectra of atomic 3d metals and rare earths in the energy range of the strong 3p→3d and 4d→(4fεf) excitations are presented. TheZ-dependence of the strength, shape and decay channels of the giant resonances is discussed. With increasing Z for the 3d metals the 3p→3d resonances change from almost symmetric lines close to the 3p-ionization limits to broad asymmetric profiles centered well below the 3p-ionization threshold. Autoionization leading to the emission of a 3d electron dominates the decay. For lowZ rare earths the 4d→(4fεf) resonances mainly decay via the emission of a 4d electron whereas for higherZ the emission of a 4f electron takes over.
