Notes: Abstract There are three possibilities for the introduction of angular momentum eigenfunctions in the vector-meson-theory: 1. Multipole fields, 2. orbital angular momentum eigenfunctions, 3. helicity eigenfunctions. We shall define these functions by eigenvalue equations and present their mutual relationship. In analogy to the usual momentum quantization we may quantize the field with respect to each of the three systems of angular momentum eigenfunctions.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A description is given for the microanalytical determination of manganese in iron and steel with samples weighing from 2.5–100 mg for manganese contents of 0.1–2%. The manganese is determined photometrically within about 30 minutes. As an average the standard deviations=±0.01% Mn and the varianceV=±2%.

Notes: Summary The control by light of the spore germination ofOsmunda cinnamomea L. andO. claytoniana L. has been investigated. This light control is complex, and in order to investigate this control quantitatively the process of germination had to be divided into at least two stages. The first stage of germination leads to the rupture of the exospore, the second step is characterized by the outgrowth of a rhizoid. In a very few percent of our spore population the first stage can occur in total darkness, the second step however does not ever occur in darkness. In the present paper it has been demonstrated, usingO. cinnamomea spores, that the first step of germination is phytochrome controlled, whereas the second step is under photosynthetic control. This was observed withO. claytoniana by a rough action spectrum and in experiments with a CO2-less atmosphere. The germinating spores of these two species ofOsmunda show a very similar behaviour as the spores of the mossFunaria hygrometrica (L.) Sibth. (Bauer andMohr 1959). They behave very differently compared with spores of other ferns, e.g.Dryopteris filix-mas (L.) Schott, where the whole process of germination is exclusively phytochrome controlled (Mohr 1956).

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Cell walls of the blue green algae Anacystis nidulans and Chlorogloea fritschii have been isolated by fractionated centrifugation after homogenization in a Mickel-disintegrator by shaking with glass beads. The purity of cell walls was controlled in the electron microscope. The freeze-dried cell wall-material was hydrolyzed 14 h in 4 n HCl for chromatography of amino acids and amino sugars, or 3 h in n/1 HCl for sugar-chromatography. Neutral sugars and uronic acids are not detected. But the mucopolymer components N-acetylglucosamine, N-acetylmuramic acid, glutamic acid, diaminopimelic acid, and alanine in a molar ratio of 1.34:1.47:1.52:1.0:2.4, and eight unspecific amino acids in molar ratios from 0.1–0.4, and further galactosamine (molar ratio 1.2) are present. Isolated cell walls are lysed by lysozyme. But whole cells are transformed in spheroplasts only by completing the lysozyme-medium with ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid. These facts suggest that walls of Chlorogloea and Anacystis are equipped with a rigid layer of mucopolymer like bacteria. The mucopolymer is responsible for rigidity and shape of cell walls. Besides mucopolymer proteins, lipids, and other unidentified substances compose the cell wall of these species of cyanophyta.

Notes: Summary Polarity was induced in spores ofEquisetum variegatum and zygotes ofFucus serratus by monochromatic light; the cells were lit partially or by combinations of different types of irradiation. 1. Partially lit cells yield the same energy-effect curve which has been found after irradiation with polarized or with unilateral unpolarized light in previous investigations. The energy requirement of the first primary process depends upon the type of irradiation. — 2. The first decline of the curve is caused by photoinactivation of the photoreceptor molecules responsible for the first primary process; this is indicated by the apparent coexistence of active and inactivated pigment in a cell. —3. The cells require approximately 20 minutes at the temperature of 20°C to restore or synthesizede novo the previously inactivated pigment.
