Description / Table of Contents:
Abstract:
*** DIRECT SUPPORT *** A01E9004 00005
Notes:
Abstract A unique orthotic arm aid is being developed by the combined efforts of the Case Institute of Technology and the Highland View Hospital of Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. The subject arm aid is a preprogrammed electronically controlled, externally powered, five degree of freedom orthesis with provisions for the electronic storage of a number of programmed motions and patient selection and modification of the programmed motions. This research orthesis is designed for patients who have lost voluntary control of their upper extremities. The design approach for the orthotic system and for major orthotic components such as the splint structure, energy sources, motors, and motor controls is discussed and illustrated. The program as discussed and illustrated is presently in the planning and development stages.
