Beschreibung: An analysis was developed to calculate the minimum mass-strength curve for an orthotropic cylinder subjected to axial compressive loading. The analysis, which includes the effects of ring and stringer eccentricities, is in a general form so that various cylinder wall and stiffener geometries can be considered. Several different ring-stiffened orthotropic configurations were studied. The minimum mass-strength curves and the dimensions associated with these curves are presented for (in order of decreasing efficiency) a tubular double bead, a nonsymmetric double bead, a Z-stiffened skin, and a trapezoidal corrugation. A comparison of efficiencies of the configurations shows a tubular element cylinder to be more efficient than a 3-percent core-density honeycomb-sandwich cylinder. It was found that for an optimized Z-stiffened skin, the location of the Z-stiffeners (internal or external) made a negligible difference in efficiency.

Beschreibung: This paper examines some basic considerations underlying dynamic shell response analysis and the impact of these considerations upon the practical aspects of solution by numerical methods. Emphasis is placed on the solution of linear problems. The present states of development of the finite difference and finite element methods are reviewed, and techniques for the treatment of temporal variation are discussed. An examination is made of the frequency parameters characteristic of thin shell theory, applied excitations, and spatial mesh geometries, and the significance of these parameters with respect to computational convergence is illustrated.

Beschreibung: Results from a continuing effort to develop automated methods for structural design are described. A system of computer programs presently under development called SAVES is intended to automate the preliminary structural design of a complete aerospace vehicle. Each step in the automated design process of the SAVES system of programs is discussed, with emphasis placed on use of automated routines for generation of finite-element models. The versatility of these routines is demonstrated by structural models generated for a space shuttle orbiter, an advanced technology transport,n hydrogen fueled Mach 3 transport. Illustrative numerical results are presented for the Mach 3 transport wing.

Beschreibung: The study of the physical conditions within the solar corona and the development of instrumentation and technical expertise necessary for advanced studies of solar X-ray emission are reported. Details are given on the Aerobee-borne-X-ray spectrometer/monochromator and also on the observing program. Preliminary discussions of some results are presented and include studies of helium-like line emission, mapping O(VII) and Ne(IX) lines, survey of O(VII) and Ne(IX) lines, study of plage regions and small flares, and analysis of line emission from individual active regions. It is concluded that the use of large-area collimated Bragg spectrometers to scan narrow wavelength intervals and the capability of the SPARCS pointing control to execute a complex observing program are established.

Beschreibung: Results of a rocket experiment flown on Apr. 29, 1971, in which a survey of the solar corona was carried out with a pair of collimated Bragg spectrometers to study the resonance, intersystem, and forbidden line emission from the helium-like ions O vii (22 A) and Ne ix (13 A). The observed X-ray emission came from the general corona, seven plage regions, and one dynamic feature - the late stage of a small flare. From the intensity of the O vii and Ne ix resonance lines the electron temperature and emission measure of the individual emitting regions are derived on the basis of two models, one in which the region is assumed to be isothermal and another in which the emission measure decreases exponentially with increasing temperature. The latter model, which is the most adequate of the two, yields for the electron temperature of the time-varying feature 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 K, for the other active regions 1,500,000 to 2,500,000 K, and for the general corona 1,300,000 to 1,700,000 K. The Ne ix emitting regions are about 1.5 times as hot as the O vii regions.

Beschreibung: Discussion of adhesive fracture of single lap shear joints in terms of a maximum stress criterion and an energy balance. The Goland and Reissner (1944) analysis is used to determine the stress distribution in the adhesive assembly, and the results obtained are introduced into an energy balance to determine the initiation of adhesive fracture. In the stress analysis the loads at the edges of the joint are first determined. This is a problem in which the deformation of the joint sheets must be taken into account and is solved by using the finite-deflection theory of cylindrically bent plates. Then the stress in the joint due to applied loads is determined. This problem is formulated as one in plane strain consisting of two rectangular sheets of equal thickness and unit width. With the aid of this stress analysis and the stresses obtained from the conditions of equilibrium the contributions to the energy change with crack length are calculated. The analysis performed is then compared with a maximum stress criterion for a lap joint.

Beschreibung: The O VII and Ne IX resonance line and 5 keV continuum emission of a small solar flare are interpreted on the basis of a model in which the emission measure of the region is an exponentially decreasing function of temperature. Good agreement with all three sets of data is obtained - a result not possible on the basis of an isothermal approximation. The change in the emission of the flare over a two minute interval appears to be consistent with a simple cooling of the region. Computation of the contribution function versus temperature for each emission indicates that each predominantly comes from a physically separate volume within the feature. The emission measure distribution for the flare is distinctly flatter than that of five plage regions which tend to have similar slopes and which are in turn flatter than the general corona.

Beschreibung: The GE experiment consisted of two types of detectors: plastics and glasses located in panel 2 and the lower half of panel 3. In panel 2, the entire exposed detector area of 14.7 by 22.6 cm was composed of 31 sheets of 0.025-cm polycarbonate plastic 9070-112. In panel 3, 39 sheets of 0.02-cm cellulose triacetate with no plasticizer made up the major volume fraction. The lower part of panel 3 contained five types of glass detectors. Particles that entered the array after it was folded were recognized, if they crossed from one sheet to another, by means of a 2-mm relative shift of alternate sheets.

Beschreibung: Particle tracks were investigated in the glass plate of a neutral density (clear flint) optical filter housed in the Surveyor 3 TV camera but exposed directly to space. The track density vs depth curve was determined and descends sharply from approximately 2.6 million tracks/sq cm at a depth of 3.6 mg/sq cm to about 35/sq cm at 700 mg/sq cm. Several tracks were of V-shapes characteristic of high energy induced fission. The erosion rate on the moon due to solar wind ions was determined from the energy spectrum, and was found to be low (0 to 2 x 10 to the minus 8th power cm/yr).

Beschreibung: The proton-produced Na-22 content of samples of Surveyor 3 TV camera, surface sampler scoop, and other components was determined by nondestructive gamma ray spectrometry. The contributions of the nine most prominent solar flares to Na-22 production were calculated to be 18 dpm/kg. The observed activity in the Surveyor 3 samples was 62 + or - dpm/kg. This indicates a galactic proton contribution of about 44 dpm/kg, which adjusted for spallation of Al gives a value of 42 dpm/kg. This is compared to measurements of 88 dpm/kg in the Lost City meteorite which had an orbit extending to 2.35 AU, with a 4 pi bombardment as compared to the 2 pi bombardment of the samples on the lunar surface. The agreement between Na-22 production in Surveyor 3 and the Lost City meteorite offers evidence that the galactic cosmic ray flux is almost the same at 1 Au and at 2.35 AU.
