Description / Table of Contents: Copper corrosion products on electric traction wiresOn the copper catenaries of electric railway, the three types of crystals of green copper patina are encountered, corresponding to basic copper chloride, nitrate and sulphate. Chloride is encountered in coastal areas, nitrate in mountain regions, and sulphate in industrial districts.

Notes: A study has been made of the effect of column geometry and flow condition upon the dispersed-phase holdup in an rotating disk type of extraction column. Variables investigated were stator opening, disk diameter, compartment height, rotor speed, and flow rates of the dispersed and continuous phases. The toluene-water system, with the toluene dispersed, was used throughout the study. The radio-isotope technique was used to measure the dispersed-phase holdup. Results of this study as well as those of earlier investigators have been used to expand upon the design equations proposed by Logsdail, Thornton, and Pratt for estimating flooding rates and dispersed-phase holdup in rotating disk columns. Modifications to increase the accuracy of prediction of these equations have also been suggested, while possible limitations in their application have been indicated.

Notes: Catalytic decomposition of nitric oxide at a concentration of 0.404 and 0.432% by volume in nitrogen was studied in a tubular flow reactor. The packing consisted of alumina pellets impregnated with 0.1% by weight of platinum oxide and 3.0% by weight of nickel oxide. Tests were conducted at pressures of 1 to 15 atm. and temperatures from 800° to 1,000°F. A rate equation correlating the data as a function of temperature, pressure, and compositions was developed. A reaction mechanism compatible with the rate equation is proposed.

Notes: A tracer study has been made of the polymerization of acrylonitrile in an aqueous solution at 25°C with the use of radioactive K2S352O8 and NaHS35O3 in a redox catalyst system. Persulfate and bisulfite give sulfate and sulfonate endgroups, respectively. The contents of these endgroups in the polymer were determined and the following empirical equation was derived: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \frac{{[{\rm Sulfonate endgroups]}}}{{[{\rm Sulfate endgroups]}}} = 1 + 0.27\left\{ {\frac{{[{\rm NaHSO}_{\rm 3} ]}}{{[{\rm AN] [K}_{\rm 2} {\rm S}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}_{\rm 8} ]}}} \right\}^{1.5} $ \end{document} Sulfonate is the major endgroup under every condition of polymerization. A tentative discussion of the polymerization initiation reaction in this redox system is given in order to account for the above experimental results.

Notes: The γ-ray-induced graft copolyinerization of cellulose and styrene by preirradiation was studied. (1) The graft copolymerization of cellulose and styrene was accelerated by immersing the cellulose in H202 solution during γ irradiation. The number of active sites such as hydroperoxides was estimated by the ferrous ion method. There is shown a correlation between the number of active sites and the rate of grafting. (2) The acetylation of the grafted cellulose-styrene polymer was carried out. The progress of the reaction was observed from the weight increase and infrared spectra measurement. The reaction proceeded very rapidly owing to the increased swelling of grafted polymer in the treating bath. (3) The acetylation of the cellulose-styrene polymer was next carried out under more severe conditions. In this case the ccllulose part of the grafted polymer was degraded by acetolysis and only the polystyrene was extracted from the grafted polymer. The viscosity-average molecular weight of the extracted polystyrene was estimated by viscometry and the degree of polymerization was calculated as 1.98 × l06. This value was compared with the number of the active sites estimated by the ferrous ion method.

Notes: A study to obtain a resin consisting only of carbon and hydrogen and yet having thermosetting properties was made. The process was a reaction of xylene-formaldehyde resin (XF-resin) with a hydrocarbon (CH) The reaction was assumed to proceed through an electrophilic substitution. To find some reactive hydrocarbons, 15 different aromatic hydrocarbons have been reacted with formaldehyde in the presence of perchloric acid. It was found that acenaphthene, acenaphthylene, anthracene and mesitylene easily reacted with formaldehyde. Some XF-resins were prepared, and reacted with the mentioned aromatic hydrocarbons.Of these hydrocarbons, acenaphthene, polyacenaphthylene and acenaphthene-formaldehyde resin were especially effective. It is understandable that an ω,ω'-dimethylol-XF-resin is more effective than a normal XF-resin. So an useful method for the synthesis of the ω,ω'-dimethylol-XF-resin was investigated.By the reaction of ω,ω'-dimethylol-XF-resin with acenaphthene-formaldehyde resin in the presence of xylene sulfonic acid, the desired cured resin was obtained. The resin consisted only of carbon and hydrogen. It was insoluble in benzene and non-melting. (However, by changing the conditions, anthracene or mesitylene can also cure XF-resins).
