Description / Table of Contents:
HBr, HCl, HF cleave C5H5SiH3, (in the absence of a solvent and catalyst; low tem- perature) according to C6H5SiH3 + HX → C6H6 + SiH3X. HCl reacts slowly. In the presence of Cu-salts, HF fluorinates the Si-H groups and no cleavage occurs. The results of the investigation of the cleavage reaction with derivates of C6H5SiH3 indicate that the stability of the silicon-phenyl bond is reinforced by the introduction of negative substituents attached to silicon. Increasing reactivity of the silicon-phenyl bond corresponds to decreasing electronegativities of the substituents. This trend is confirmed by the reactions of bromine and iodine. Cl2 and Br2 easily react pith C6H5SiH3 and its derivates containing Si-H bonds to give phenyltrihalogenosilanes; thus no silicon-phenyl bond cleavage occurs. The reaction of iodine with Si-H groups proceeds less readily. Together with the iodination, a cleavage of the silicon-phenyl bond is caused by HI resulting from iodination of the Si-H group.
Notes:
