Notes: Summary 1. The synthesis of a series of secondary alcohols has been carried out by the addition of C5–C10 primary alcohols to C6 – C13 α-olefins. The reaction initiator was t-butyl peroxide. 2. The optimum conditions for this reaction are: temperature, 140– 160°; time, 3–6 hours; molar ratio alcohol: olefin: peroxide=20 ∶ 1 ∶ 0.3.

Notes: Summary An apparatus for the automatic recording of the bioelectric potential of isolated frog skin and of the “short-circuit current,” which is a measure of “active” Na+ transport, is described. The equivalence of the uninterrupted short-circuit current and active Na+ transport has been checked. Current and Na+ transport agreed within 2%. The automatic ion transport recorder is particularly suited in studies where the exact time course of the effects of enzyme inhibitors, drugs and other chemicals on skin is of interest. This is illustrated by showing the effects of fluoroacetate, quinone and hydroquinone on spontaneous skin potential and short-circuit current. Attention is called to characteristic transients in the potential records which are probably related to changes in skin permeability to passively moving chloride ions.

Notes: Abstract The basic data on a cyclotron with a pole-piece diameter of 120 cm are given. The arrangement of the principal parts of the system, the design features of the individual units, the radio frequency (rf) installation, the method of measuring and correcting the magnetic field, the features of the deflection system, and the method of focusing the beam on a remote target are all described. Deuterons are accelerated to an energy of 13.7 Mev in this machine. The use of a deflection system with focusing properties makes it possible to use magnetic quadruple lenses with small apertures which bring practically the entire deflected beam to a remote target. The parameters of the machine are such, that it will be possible to increase significantly theenergyof the accelerated ions in the future.

Notes: Abstract In this article we investigate the possible temperature changes in a nuclear energy station as a function of the thermal power of the reactor when there are two limiting temperatures: for the shell and for the center of the heat-emitting elements. We find the changes in the allowed thermal and electrical power of the unit as a function of the parameters of the thermodynamic cycle. We give the reader an understanding of the boundary thermal power of the reactor and the efficiency of the generator. We also give the conditions under which the formulas which we have derived may be used for a preliminary calculation of the optimum parameters of the thermodynamic cycle. Our analysis gives the curves which show the increase in the parameters and the efficiency of the electrical generating station as a function of the material of which the shell is constructed and of the type of nuclear fuel used.

Notes: Abstract To determine the system of metal forming of uranium in order to produce sheets, bars, tubes, etc., an investigation was made of the force and deformatión characteristics in rolling, extruding, wire-drawing, and stamping of uranium. Determinations were made of the relationship between releability of uranium and the temperature and between the average specific pressure of uranium on the rolls, the absolute widening and the degree of reduction (from 10 to 50%), and the temperature (from 400 to 1000 °C). A calculation of the average specific pressure of uranium on the rolls according to the analytical formula of A. I. Tselikov [1] showed good agreement between the calculated data and the experimental results. A study was made of the dependence of the extrusion stress on the drawing (up to 54), the temperature (from 250 to 800 °C), and the scale factor (the ratio of diameters of the containers equal to 5). The concepts are introduced of extrudability and the modulus of the extrusion stress, methods are proposed for calculating them, and the dependence is determined on the temperature of extrudability and the modulus. A study is made of the dependence of the wire drawing stress and the safety coefficient on the degree of deformation (from 5.5 to 34%).

Notes: Summary Electron micrographs of fixed sections of the plasmodium of the classic protoplasmic material,Physarum polycephalum, are presented. Numerous round nuclei having well-defined membranes and containing one to three dense nucleoli were especially prominent in the plasmodium. In the surrounding cytoplasm, many irregular membrane-limited bodies were evident, some containing tiny rod-like elements and others with inner structures resembling mitochondria. In addition, there can be seen many small dense granules plus various vacuoles and other inclusions.

Notes: Summary Subterranean clover, tomato, phalaris, and radiata pine were grown with a complete plant- nutrient solution in sterile sand and agar and inoculated with soil suspensions prepared from unsterilized and from sterilized soil. The presence of micro-organisms reduced primary-root growth in all plants and total root growth in most plants. The total numbers of secondary roots were lower in non-sterile treatments but there was a tendency for an increase in the concentrations of secondary roots with the non-sterile plants. Under the test conditions only radiata pine grown in sterile sand produced significantly greater top growth than those grown in the presence of micro-organisms. Root-stunting micro-organisms were shown to occur in each of four different soil types used in the studies but the extent of stunting varied with the soil. In agar, root stunting was observed at 5 days and 9 days after planting (and inoculation) with subterranean clover and tomato respectively. Production and growth of root hairs by subterranean clover was markedly reduced by organisms from all four soils tested, the reduction varying with the soil. In contrast to root-stunting organisms, root-hair suppressing micro-organisms were abundant in soil. Root-hair suppression was apparent in sand after 3 days and is an inhibition of root-hair development rather than microbial digestion of existing root hairs. Only slight root-hair reduction was observed for tomato and phalaris.
