Description: Peat soils change gradually as a result of drainage and cultivation, losing depth through shrinkage, oxidation and blowing, changing in character through increases in mineral matter and ‘drumminess’, and changing in productivity and manurial requirements. The sequence of changes has been studied in the field and a number of stages distinguished which may be recognized quite simply from the texture of the ploughed layer. Texture is a field assessment of the type and condition of the peat and the proportion and nature of the mineral matter associated with it. The Fenland soils have been classified as follows: (1) peat soils, (2) peaty mineral soils, (3) organic mineral soils and (4) mineral soils. Further subdivision into textural classes depends on recognizing the mineral combinations or fractions as in texturing mineral soilsAnalysis of samples of the ploughed layer in the laboratory has shown that organic matter or loss on ignition figures, expressed as a percentage of the oven-dried soil, can be used for recognizing the kind of soil; use is made of this in considering those earlier experiments for which organic matter figures could be calculated.

Notes: An investigation of transient heat transfer and water removal from a sheet on a steam cylinder was made. The sheet was pressed onto the cylinder by the aid of a felt. A theory describing the heat transfer in terms of the Fourier heat equation and appropriate boundary conditions was developed. The differential equation describing fluid flow in a capillary under the capillary potential was also developed. This equation was solved for small values of time. The experimental work included the measurement of the transient temperatures at internal points in the sheet, the average felt temperature before and after a run, the mass of moisture lost by the sheet, and the mass of water gained by the felt.It was found that on felted cylinders the majority of the moisture was removed by liquid transport. It was also found that heat was transferred through the sheet by vaporization-condensation cycles as well as conduction.

Description / Table of Contents: In a high vacuum system the preparation of anhydrous boron chloride from boron and silver chloride was studied, the yield of boron chloride being measured as a function of time at various temperatures. The reaction was found to be slow below and rapid above 600 °C. Optimum yields of approx. 70% were obtained at 650 °C (with stoichiometric mixtures of the components). This method is useful for preparing small amounts of radioactive labelled volatile metal halides of high specific activities.

Description / Table of Contents: The enthalpies ΔH and the Gibbs free energies ΔG were calculated for reactions of the type \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm Me + n AgX (n CuX) } \to {\rm MeX}_{\rm n} {\rm + n Ag (n Cu)} $$\end{document} (Me = B, Si; X = Cl, Br, J). According to the pressure dependence of °G, some reactions which are not possible at normal pressure are favoured by applying a high vacuum. The preparation of the boron and silicium halides was investigated in detail. Optimum conditions were determined by measuring the yield as a function of time at various temperatures. The application of this type of reaction to other systems (Me = Ge, Sn, As, Sb; X = Cl) is described.
Me + n AgX (n CuX) } \to {\rm MeX}_{\rm n} {\rm + n Ag (n Cu)} $$\end{document} berechnet (Me = B, Si; X = Cl, Br, J). Me = Ge, Sn, As, Sb; X = Cl).

Description: In continuance of investigations upon successive annual crops of oats reported in Radiocarbon Supplement, Volume 2, we undertook the analysis of successive annual rings of a tree that had been growing throughout the period covered by the oat-crop assays, namely 1953 to 1959. The selected tree was a straight-boled specimen of Populus nigra from the Forestry Commission's plantations at Santon Downham, near Thetford, Norfolk. It had been planted in 1929 and was felled on 21 October, 1959. Shortly afterwards, it was brought into the laboratory and sawn into slices just over 1 in. thick. The surfaces having been smoothed, the annual-ring contacts were marked, and within each annual ring the inner (spring) wood was marked off from the outer (autumn) wood. The tree had been chosen as one exhibiting rapid growth and it proved fairly easy to dissect off with a chisel all the separate half-rings between spring 1953 and the end of 1959. In the event, activities were determined only upon four of the half or whole rings.
