Notes: Two-phase, gas-liquid concurrent flow in packed beds was investigated with the use of an air-water system and 2-, 4-, and 6-in. diameter columns packed with tabular alumina particles of 0.025 and 0.027 ft. diameters. Total pressure drop, column operating pressure, and liquid saturation were measured as functions of gas flow rate, fluid temperatures, and flow direction at several constant liquid flow rates for each column.Correlation of the frictional pressure loss was achieved in terms of a defined two-phase friction factor and a second correlating parameter which is a function of the liquid and gas Reynolds numbers. A viscosity correction factor was required to extend the friction factor correlation to include liquid viscosities widely divergent from that of water. The liquid saturation data for both upward and downward flow were correlated in terms of the ratio of mass flow rates of the respective phases.

Notes: Irreversible, first-order, simultaneous heterogeneous and homogeneous reactions in an isothermal tubular reactor under laminar flow conditions are studied. Accurate values of the eigenvalues, eigenfunctions, and radial concentration profiles are found for the dilute system. Criteria are given as to when the homogeneous reaction may be neglected with respect to the heterogeneous reaction and vice versa. It is found that for a certain range of the rate parameters well-known limiting solutions apply. Outside this range, the new solutions must be used.

Notes: This study was undertaken to ascertain the accuracy of finite-difference solutions for flow around spherical particles in the intermediate Reynolds number range. Comparison of the results with experimental data on drag coefficients, frontal stagnation pressure, and wake geometry indicated good agreement. The approximate solutions, in which the Galerkin method and asymptotic analytical predictions were utilized, were evaluated by using the finite-difference solutions as a standard. These methods were used to calculate the effect of uniform and nonuniform mass efflux on the drag and flow characteristics around a sphere. Theoretical solutions indicated that nonuniform mass efflux can significantly reduce the drag on a submerged object. Ranges of applicability of the approximate methods were established.

Notes: Using a thermodynamically consistent form of equation of state proposed by Foulkes, one can determine the virial coefficients of the pressure expansion from Joule-Thomson coefficient data. A modification of the method has been applied for nitrogen and ethane within the temperature range from 50°C. to the normal boiling point. Mixture rules are proposed that allow reproduction of experimental data on μ for nitrogen-ethane mixtures at pressures below the critical pressure of ethane.

Notes: The effect of design and operational variables on the performance of one type of hydrogen-oxygen ion exchange membrane fuel cell has been studied. Only the results of cells based on a phenolsulfonic acid formaldehyde type of ion exchange membrane containing one type of reinforcement are described. Platinum, palladium, iridium, and rhodium are adequate electrode materials for room-temperature operation. Performance of cells with platinum gauze current collectors bonded to the cell surfaces was only slightly better than that with external contacts about 1 cm. apart.Open circuit voltages range from 0.9 to 1.1 v. (theoretical 1.23) depending on the catalyst. The typical current at 0.5 v. is 30 ma./sq. cm. Better cells have delivered 80 ma./sq. cm. at 0.5 v. Life tests indicate that these cells can be expected to deliver a minimum of about 40 amp.-hr./sq. cm., when operated in the load range 8.5 to 230 ohm sq. cm., before failure of the electrolyte owing to pinhole formation. Current efficiency is very nearly 100%. Cell performance vs. temperature in the range 0° to 85°C. shows a maximum at about 55°C.

Notes: In predicting interfacial area in liquid-liquid systems there are several published reports which give different results. Differences in methods of measurement of interfacial area and impeller design and location account for some of these discrepancies. For one pair of liquids, 40 parts by volume of ethylhexanol and 60 parts water, it was found that over wide ranges of impeller size to tank size ratio (0.27 to 0.67) that equal power per unit volume gave equal interfacial area per unit volume.

Notes: The captured vortex system produced by the flow of a fluid along a plate containing a transverse rectangular cavity was investigated by measuring the local mass transfer coefficient kg on the cavity walls. Both transverse and peripheral kg profiles are presented for cavity depth-to-length ratios of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 at free-stream velocities of 6.8, 13.5, and 27 ft./sec. for water evaporating into air. These profiles reflect the three-dimensional nature of the flow in the cavity.
