Notes: Experimental data, believed accurate within ±0.5%, are presented for pressures of 100 to 8,000 Ib./sq. in. abs. for nine temperatures from 77° to 280°F. One isotherm, within 1° of the critical, indicates the detail required in further investigation of the critical region. These data were combined with the available literature values to prepare a table of recommended viscosity values with maximum uncertainty of ±2% for temperatures from 70° to 460°F. Two generalized correlations and the Enskog viscosity theory for dense gases exhibit significant errors in predicting the data. Methods are suggested for extrapolation of the values to higher temperatures and pressures.

Notes: A method is proposed for computing the steady state activity levels at various points within a reactor-regenerator system in which the residence time distribution functions in the reactor and regenerator, the permanent deactivation function, and the temporary deactivation and activation functions are arbitrarily specified. A particularly simple solution to these equations is obtained when the temporary activation and deactivation functions are of exponential form. The latter equations are used to calculate values of the mean activity in the reactor for the limiting cases of piston type of flow and complete mixing under a variety of conditions.

Notes: A theoretical analysis for the laminar flow past arbitrary external surfaces of non-Newtonian fluids of the power-law model is presented. The main problem which is considered is how to predict the drag and the rate of heat transfer from an isothermal surface to the fluid. Inspectional analysis of the modified boundary-layer equations yields a general relationship both for the drag coefficient and for the Nusselt number as functions of the generalized Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The flow past a horizontal flat plate is studied in detail numerically.

Notes: A rigorous mathematical description, consisting of differential-difference equations, is presented for binary batch rectification in the plate type of column. Two approaches are taken to solving these equations for the condition of constant reflux ratio: an integration by numerical means employing an IBM 650 computer, and a hand calculation procedure that involves trial-and-error computation of batch-rectification curves, which is of interest primarily where high-speed computing equipment is not available.Enthalpy balances are used to avoid assumption of equal rate of overflow in the tower; weight units are used instead of mole units; means for accounting for holdup in the condenser-accumulator system are described. Criteria of convergence and stability of the numerical solution are presented. The validity of the results of the proposed calculation procedures is substantiated by the close agreement of experimental and calculated batch-rectification curves.

Notes: A polyurethane bearing pendant hydroxyl groups and carbon-carbon double bonds was prepared. Curing was carried out by diisocyanates of different lengths and by an accelerated sulfur recipe. The vulcanizate properties of modulus, hardness, and resilience were found to be independent of both the length and chemical nature of the crosslink. Compression set, however, was always higher for the sulfur cures, an effect which can be attributed to the disulfide structure of this particular crosslink. Both physical and chemical evidence support this structure. Diisocyanate curing of the dolyurethane via the hydroxyl groups is a clean-cut, essentially quantitative reaction which provided an absolute method for determining the degree of crosslinking. Excellent agreement was obtained between the physical degree of crosslinking as determined by equilibrium modulus and the chemical degree of crosslinking. This agreement provides further verification of the network-statistical theory of rubber elasticity in highly swollen systems. No chain entanglement was observed.

Notes: Graft copolymers of polyethylene were prepared by gamma irradiation of polyethylene films immersed in the appropriate monomer. The majority of gas permeability measurements were made by Barrer's high vacuum technique; others were made by measuring volumetric change as a function of time. Sorption isotherms were obtained by using a quartz helix microbalance. Temperature dependent permeability constants have been obtained for permeation of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide through styrene, acrylonitrile, and vinylpyridine grafted to low-density polyethylene. Permeability constants at 25°C. have also been determined as a function of water vapor partial pressure for the above systems. Some values for permeation of carbon dioxide through styrene grafted to high density or linear polyethylene are also given. Organic vapors studied were methyl bromide and isobutene, permeability constants at 0°C. being determined for styrene and acrylonitrile-polyethylene graft copolymers as a function of organic vapor pressure. The data show clearly that permeation through acrylonitrile and vinylpyridine-polyethylene grafts is primarily a diffusion process, while in permeation through polyethylene-styrene grafts, there is also a crystallite solution effect. Percentage grafts varied from 0 to 100 parts monomer per 100 parts by weight polyethylene.
