Notes: On irradiation of polyethylene at 142° with Co60 γ-rays the ability of the linear chains to crystallize from the melt is significantly reduced. This effect is about two and one half times as pronounced in a linear polyethylene with terminal (vinyl) unsaturation as it is in a linear polyethylene with internal (vinylene) unsaturation. The decay, during the irradiation, of initially present vinylene groups apparently leads to endlink rather than to crosslink formation. This fact suggests the conclusion that the vinylene groups initially present in the linear polyethylene must be located near the ends of the polymeric chains. The greater effect of vinyl unsaturation in causing inhibition of crystallization compared with that of vinylene unsaturation is due to the greater decay constant of the vinyl group - about threefold that of the vinylene group.

Notes: Data are presented for the preparation of high molecular weight and crystalline polymers of allylbenzene. With specific cationic catalysts, low molecular oligomers of β-methylstyrene are produced. With anionic catalysts, such as sodium and cesium, nonpolymerizable metallates are obtained from which the monomer may be regenerated. Stereospecific catalysts, prepared from triethylaluminum and titanium halides have been investigated as catalysts for allylbenzene. Solid polymers of allylbenzene have been obtained only under very specific catalytic conditions.

Notes: Polycondensation of ethylene dichloride and 3,3′-iminobis(propylamine) resulted in high molecular weight soluble polymers or insoluble gels, depending on the ratio of the reactants and the extent of reaction. It is shown that the functionality of a polyfunctional compound containing groups of unequal reactivities can be determined experimentally. The effective functionality of 3,3′-iminobis(propylamine) was found to be 2.9 from gelation studies and 3.5 based on the relative reaction rates of the primary and secondary amino groups. By using the effective functionality value, the reaction kinetics can be treated in a simple manner. A typical soluble polymer formed has a low intrinsic viscosity and a very high M̄w/M̄n ratio. Condensations of other alkylene dichlorides and alkylene polyamines demonstrated the validity of Carothers' rule that high polymers will not result if formation of 5- or 6-membered rings is possible.

Notes: A constitutive equation is derived for stress-relaxation in isotropic incompressible viscoelastic solids at small constant deformations. This is used to calculate the torque and tensile force necessary to maintain simultaneous torsion and simple extension in a straight circular tube. Measurements are made of the dependence of the tensile force and torque on the amount of torsion and fractional extension in tubes of filled high-polymers. It is shown that by means of the theory the results of certain of the experiments can be predicted from others.

Notes: From a series of measurements by light-scattering the molecular weight, MLS, and the radius gyration, ρz, have been obtained for a variety of samples of DNA prepared from fish sperm or testes. The intrinsic viscosities at zero rate of shear of these samples were obtained using a COUETTE viscometer. Correlating these two series of data yields the following relationships: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$\begin{array}{*{20}c} {[\eta ] = 1.26 \cdot 10^{11} {\rm \rho }_{\rm z}^{\rm 2} } \hfill \\ {{\rm \rho }_{\rm z}^{\rm 2} = 8.7 \cdot 10^{ - 17} {\rm M}_{{\rm LS}} } \hfill \\ {[\eta ] = 1.1 \cdot 10^{ - 5} {\rm M}_{{\rm LS}} } \hfill \\ \end{array}$$\end{document} The extent which these relationships are obeyed by DNA which has been subjected to treatment is a guide to the kind of damage it has suffered.

Description: This paper considers the nature of a non-linear, two-dimensional solution of the Navier-Stokes equations when the rate of amplification of the disturbance, at a given wave-number and Reynolds number, is sufficiently small. Two types of problem arise: (i) to follow the growth of an unstable, infinitesimal disturbance (supercritical problem), possibly to a state of stable equilibrium; (ii) for values of the wave-number and Reynolds number for which no unstable infinitesimal disturbance exists, to follow the decay of a finite disturbance from a possible state of unstable equilibrium down to zero amplitude (subcritical problem). In case (ii) the existence of a state of unstable equilibrium implies the existence of unstable disturbances. Numerical calculations, which are not yet completed, are required to determine which of the two possible behaviours arises in plane Poiseuille flow, in a given range of wave-number and Reynolds number. It is suggested that the method of this paper (and of the generalization described by Part 2 by J. Watson) is valid for a wide range of Reynolds numbers and wave-numbers inside and outside the curve of neutral stability.
