    Notes: The interaction between a carbon black filler and styrene-butadiene rubber is increased if the material is heated after milling. This effect has been attributed to the polymeric free radicals which are presented after milling but which require a high temperature to increase their mobility to the point where they can react. The extent of interaction increases with time of heating and with the amount of milling before heating. The postulated mechanism is supported by the experimental activation energies and by the predictable influence of free radical scavengers on the system.

    Notes: Aus Calebassen-Curare konnte ein neues Alkaloid (C-Alkaloid BL) isoliert werden, das im Papierchromatogramm (Lösungsmittel «C») zwischen C-Calebassin und C-Alkaloid H liegt. Es ist biquartär, wird von Cer(IV)-sulfat blau gefärbt. Sein UV.-Spektrum entspricht einem Oxindol- bzw. N-Acylindolin-Chromophor. Im IR.-Spektrum ist eine starke Säureamidbande vorhanden. Die Curarewirkung ist ca. 1/50 derjenigen des Toxiferins.

    Notes: The general instability of desoxy-isoalloxazines has been confirmed by studying the formation and decomposition of 4-phenyl-4-desoxy-isoalloxazines and -alloxazines. It has been shown, that the former (4-desoxy-flavins) may be synthesized in the semiquinonoid radical state. These radicals react with O2 or H2O2 with fission of the 4-substituents to give the analogous 4-oxo-compounds by a hydroperoxide rearrangement. In view of this instability, the oxinate like structure of flavin metal chelates may be excluded.

    Notes: Phosphorus trichloride and oxygen react readily with polyethylene to introduce phosphonic dichloride ( - POCl2) groups into the polymer (chlorophosphonation). Treatment of the resulting intermediate with water, alcohols, and amines yields polymeric alkylphosphonic acids, esters and amides, respectively. Derivatives containing as much as 16% phosphorus have been prepared. With increasing degree of phosphonation, polyethylene crystallinity is reduced, the acid and amide derivatives become stiffer, less extensible, and less soluble in nonpolar solvents, and internal plasticization is observed in the ester derivatives. No significant decrease in flammability is effected by phosphonation unless chlorine is introduced also. The ester and amide derivatives crosslink under mild conditions by an unknown mechanism, the acid derivative will crosslink on heating with litharge. The chlorophosphonation reaction is sensitive to inhibitors and no highly active catalyst was found. The rate appears to be governed by the rate at which oxygen dissolves in the mixture. Substitution of air or chlorine for oxygen, phenyldichlorophosphine or diphenylchlorophosphine for phosphorus trichloride results in introduction of phosphorus-containing groups into polyethylene, also, but at reduced rates. In sharp contrast to polyethylene's apparent stability toward the phosphonation conditions, polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), and polyisobutylene undergo a rapid decrease in molecular weight on treatment with phosphorus trichloride and oxygen. The fact that these four polymers exhibit the same relative behavior, i.e., polyethylene is stable whereas the other three polymers are unstable, in various free radical processes argues for a free radical mechanism in the chlorophosphonation reaction.

    Notes: The chain conformation of the isotactic polymer of m-methylstyrene is discussed in this paper. As it was possible to foresee, the chain has a helicoidal shape, but, contrary to other chains of isotactic polymers, it contains 11 monomeric units in 3 pitches. Owing to the structural complexity which does not allow a calculation of structure factors, the distribution of intensity in the x-ray fiber spectrum is compared with the distribution of intensity, which should provide an isolated chain having the proposed conformation. The calculation has been performed according to a formula previously deduced. The agreement obtained is satisfactory. The possibility of applying the same procedure to the resolution of other problems is briefly discussed.

    Notes: The dielectric constants and losses have been measured at 20°C. and wavelengths of 1.25, 3.22, 10.0, 25, and 50 cm., and 575 m. for a series of dilute benzene solutions of a polyester of 1,2-propylene glycol and adipic acid with molecular weight between 5,000 and 7,000. The dielectric constant and loss values are plotted against the weight concentrations of the solute and the slopes of the straight lines thus obtained are examined by four different methods of analysis. The data may be represented in terms of two parameters, a most probable relaxation time and a distribution factor, two relaxation times, or a distribution of relaxation times between two limiting values. The values obtained for the relaxation times are close to those previously found for long-chain fatty acid esters and correspond to relaxation by twisting of short segments containing carboxy groups around bonds in the chain. A value 1.57 × 10 - 18 obtained for the effective dipole moment of the COOC group as compared to 1.9 × 10 - 18 in a small monoester indicates some restriction of rotation around the bonds because of mutual repulsion between the polar groups.

    Description / Table of Contents: Die Anwendbarkeit der Trübungstitrationsmethode zur Analyse von Polymermischungen wurde an bekannten Mischungen untersucht. Die Methode war, wenn Mischungen von Block- oder Pfropfcopolymeren mit Homopolymeren benutzt wurden, in drei von vier Versuchen nicht einmal halbquantitativ.Elektronenmikroskopische Aufnahmen von Proben der Suspension, die während der Trübungstitrationen der Polymerlösungen entnommen wurden, zeigten, daß die Voraussetzung einer einheitlichen Teilchengröße oder einer einfachen geometrischen Teilchenform nicht gegeben ist.
    Notes: The validity of turbidimetric titration in the analysis of polymer mixtures was tested using mixtures of known composition. In some cases, which included three out of four mixtures of block or graft copolymers with homopolymers, the method was not even semiquantitative.Electron micrographs of samples of the suspension taken during titration of single polymer solutions show that assumptions of uniform size or regular geometrical shape of the particles are invalid.
