Notes: The utility and the practical precision of the Most Probable Number method for determining bacterial populations is currently restricted by a lack of adequate tables of solved examples or alternatively by an easy and quick solution to individual problems. Where an electronic computer is available, these restrictions need not apply. A computer programme and example solution for tabulated data and individual problems are presented in this paper.

Notes: A viscometric polydispersity index may be calculated by forming the ratio of the viscosity-average molecular weights of a polymer in a relatively good solvent and in a relatively poor solvent and subtracting 1. This index has been examined by measuring dilute solution viscosities of a polydisperse polystyrene and a polydisperse methyl methacrylate in a variety of solvents, calculating viscosity-average molecular weights using Mark-Staudinger-Houwink equations, and forming the viscometric polydispersity indices. These are compared to Schulz parameters, weight-average-number-average molecular weight ratios minus 1, determined from osmotic pressure and light scattering. Viscometric polydispersity indices are more sensitive to polydispersities than expected when compared to Schulz parameters if account is taken of the differences in the powers of molecular weight in the various molecular weight sums. Viscometric polydispersity indices are examined for other polymers, including an almost monodisperse polystyrene. From these measurements it is concluded that the viscometric polydispersity index is valuable for characterizing the polydispersity of polydisperse linear polymers and rough fractions. The weight-average-viscosity-average polydispersity index is more sensitive than the viscometric polydispersity index and may be used to characterize relatively monodisperse linear polymers.

Notes: Solution studies of Kel-F elastomer and Viton A with various amines have shown that dehydrohalogenation is the primary step in crosslinking and usually proceeds at temperatures lower than those required for gelation. There is a difference in the reactivity between the two polymers; dehydrohalogenation and gelation occur more readily with Kel-F elastomer than with Viton A. The rate of reaction and temperature at which gelation is observed depend upon the type of amine. Mechanisms of crosslinking are proposed and discussed.

Notes: The nonbonding interactions were calculated for four models resembling types of propylene polymerization. The calculations predict syndiotactic polymerization for a radical or carbonium ion model and suggest isotactic polymerization for anionic-type reaction.

Description / Table of Contents: Calcination of cold and hot water pipes made of copper or ironAlthough the caronate hardness of natural waters mainly consists of calcium and magnesium compounds, the calcium compound are the only ones whose solubility is affected by carbonic acid. In this connection, a distinction must be made between genuinely dissolved carbonic acid and carbonic acid dissolved under pressure, and also between pseudo-dissolved and electrochemically ineffectiv carbonic acid. The deposition of calcium compounds on pipe surfaces (calcination) depends on the condition of the carbonic acid and on the reaction of the pipe materials to water. The later influence predominates, i. e., a higher chemical resistance results in a lesser degree of calcination.
