Description / Table of Contents: A review is given of those methods for peptide syntheses, which are suitable for the preparation of polypeptides: the polycondensation of methylesters of oligopeptides, of thioesters, of azides, of chlorides, and of the N-phenylthiocarbonyl derivatives. Poly-α-amino acids of highest molecular weight are obtained from α-amino acid N-carbonic anhydrides with strong bases as starting compounds. Two mechanisms are proposed for this reaction. Finally, attention is directed to the possibility of obtaining polypeptides from lower peptides by using proteolytic enzymes as catalysts (plastein reaction).
