Notes: [Auszug] Adult male and female rabbits and rats were used in this study. Complete transverse fractures of the left tibia were produced by an open operation under ether anassthesia. In the case of rabbits intra-medullary pins were used to fix the fractured ends of the bone. In rats the fractures were ...

    Notes: Abstract The X-ray structure of a novel mononuclear heptacoordinated compound chlorodiphenylantimony(V) bis(2-methyl benzoate), SbPh2CI(O2C—2—Me—C6H4)2 is described. Crystal data are: Monoclinic, P21/c, a = 8.791(3), b = 21.687(3), c = 13.488(4) Å, β = 103.78(2)°, and Z = 4. A distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry for antimony with both the carboxylates chelating is found in the solid state.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary.  To study the scope and limitations of the use of complexed species of AlCl3 in Friedel-Crafts reactions, we investigated the acetylation and benzoylation of 2(3H)-benzoxazolone and 3-methyl-2(3H)-benzoxazolone varying the amide complexing agent. We replaced dimethylformamide by N-methylformamide, dimethylacetamide, pyrrolidone, N-methylpyrrolidone, tetramethylurea, and dimethylsulfoxide. However, there was no particular advantage of substituting dimethylformamide by another amide ligand. This can probably be ascribed to the fact that the complex formed between AlCl3 and the complexing agent becomes too stable. Alternatively, a route using polyphosphoric acid and microwave activation was explored. The major advantage of running the reaction in a microwave oven was that a good yield was reached in a rather short period of time.

Notes: Abstract: The electronic properties of rare-earth arsenides have been calculated from first principles. In the calculations we have treated the rare-earth f electrons both as core-like and as valence-like electrons. We consider the changes in the energy bands and in the density of states near the Fermi level which are found to be relevant, except for the case of LuAs, and discuss this in relation with the role played from the rare-earth 5d derived states. Moreover we show that the rare-earth 5d related bands are particularly sensitive to the variation of the lattice constant; change in the lattice constant of less than 1% leads to a different behaviour with respect to the crossing of the rare-earth 5d derived bands and the As 4p derived bands along the Δ-direction. This point is discussed in connection with the possibility of having a semimetal-semiconductor transition in the rare-earth arsenides.

Notes: [Auszug] Several examples of functional G-protein–coupled receptor heterodimers have been identified. However, it is not known whether receptor heterodimerization is involved in the pathogenesis of human disorders. Here we show that in preeclamptic hypertensive women, a significant increase in ...

Notes: Abstract Heat Transfer characteristics of pulsated turbulent pipe flow under different conditions of pulsation frequency, amplitude and Reynolds number were experimentally investigated. The pipe wall was kept at uniform heat flux. Reynolds number was varied from 5000 to 29 000 while frequency of pulsation ranged from 1 to 8 Hz. The results show an enhancement in the local Nusselt number at the entrance region. The rate of enhancement decreased as Re increased. Reduction of heat transfer coefficient was observed at higher frequencies and the effect of pulsation is found to be significant at high Reynolds number. It can be concluded that the effect of pulsation on the mean Nusselt numbers is insignificant at low values of Reynolds number.

Notes: Abstract Empirical correlation has been developed for local and average Nusselt numbers in the thermal entrance region of steady and pulsating turbulent air-flows in a pipe. The correlation was based on experimental data obtained from experiment carried out on a pipe heated under uniform heat flux conditions. The rate of flow was periodically varied at frequencies ranging from 1 Hz to 13 Hz while the average Reynolds number varied from 6400 to 42000.

Notes: Abstract Intensively managed crop systems are normally dependent on nitrogen input to maximize yield potential. Improvements in nitrogen- use efficiency (NUE) in crop plants may support the development of cropping systems that are more economically efficient and environment friendly. The objective of this study was to map and characterize quantitative trait loci (QTL) for NUE in a maize population. In preliminary experiments, inbred lines contrasting for NUE were identified and were used to generate populations of F2:3 families for genetic study. A total of 214 F2:3 families were evaluated in replicated trials under high nitrogen (280 kg/ha) and low nitrogen (30 kg/ha) conditions in 1996 and 1997. Analysis of ear-leaf area, plant height, grain yield, ears per plant, kernels number per ear, and kernel weight indicated significant genetic variation among F2:3 families. The heritability of these traits was found to be high (h2=0.57–0.81). The mapping population were genotyped using a set of 99 restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers. A linkage map of these markers was developed and used to identify QTL. Between two and six loci were found to be associated with each trait. The correspondence of several genomic regions with traits measured under nitrogen limited conditions suggests the presence of QTL associated with NUE. QTLs will help breeders to improve their maize ideotype of a low-nitrogen efficiency by identifying those constitutive and adaptive traits involved in the expression of traits significantly correlated with yield, such as ear leaf area and number of ears per plant.

Notes: Abstract Fixation of137Cs,144Ce,60Co,90Sr,240Th and233U from aqueous and phosphate media on bentonite clay was studied. The fixation of the radioactive ions on bentonite surfaces was dependent on the pH behavior of the metal ions. A method was proposed to use bentonite as an absorbent of ions from simulated radioactive waste as a treatment step.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we use the Wiener–Hopf equations technique to suggest and analyze new iterative methods for solving general quasimonotone variational inequalities. These new methods differ from previous known methods for solving variational inequalities.
