A method of the quantitative determination of the Si—CH3-, Si—CH2—Si-, Si—CCl3-, Si—CH2Cl- and Si—CCl2—Si-groups in silicon-organic compounds is described. 1The chlorine-substituted methyl and methylene groups of silicon-methyl and silicon-methylene compounds quantitatively undergo hydrolytic cleavage of the siliconcarbon bond (the ease of the reaction increases with the degree of chlorination of the methyl group) yielding the corresponding chloromethanes, i.e. the Si—CCl3 is quantitatively converted into HCCl3, Si—CCl2—Si and Si—CHCl2 into H2CCl2, Si—CH2Cl into HCl and CH3Cl. The chloromethanes are analyzed by gas-chromatography. Si—CH2Cl is quantitatively determined by titration of hydrolyzable chlorine and determination of CH3Cl by gaschromatography.2Photochemical chlorination of the silicon-methyl and silicon-methylene compounds easily yields the maximal degree of chlorination (C—H to C—Cl). Thus it is possible to determine the Si—CH3 and Si—CH2-Si groups by chlorination according to 1.The conditions of the quantitative hydrolysis of the above mentioned groups and the procedure for their determination are described. Use may be made of this method for the determination of the purity of chlorinated silicon-organic compounds and for further confirmation of their structure.
Notes:
