Notes: The stepwise reaction between titanium alkoxides and benzoic acid has been investigated in detail. It has been shown that replacement of first two alkoxy groups of titanium alkoxide (Ti(OR)4; OR=OPri, or OEt) proceeds smoothly and the corresponding mono and di-benzoate derivatives, (C6H5COO)Ti(OR)3 and (C6H5COO)2Ti(OR)2, are formed quantitatively. The substitution of third alkoxy group proceeds slowly and the tri-benzoate derivative, (C6H5COO)3Ti(OR), is less stable decomposing into titanyl benzoate, (C6H5COO)2Ti=O, and corresponding ester, C6H5COOR. The course of reaction appears to be unaffected even in presence of excess benzoic acid (more than 4 moles). The reactions have been carried out in benzene medium and have been followed by estimating the alcohol removed in the azeotrope, analysis of products of reaction and isolation of esters produced as a result of decomposition of the tri-benzoate derivatives.

Notes: The stepwise reaction between titanium tetra-chloride and benzoic acid has been investigated in detail. The formation of C6H5COOTiCl3 and (C6H5COO)2TiCl2 is direct and rapid. Further replacement of chlorine by benzoate radical makes the resulting molecule unstable and no tetra-benzoate is formed. A plausible mechanism has been suggested for the decomposition of mono-chloride derivative under different conditions. Titanyl benzoate has been obtained by treating a mixture of titanium tetra-chloride and excess benzoic acid in benzene with anhydrous ammonia. The results indicate that the reactions of titanium tetra-chloride with benzoic acid are similar to those with acetic acid, this finding is in sharp contrast to the different behaviour of titanium tetra-chloride towards alcohols and phenols.

Notes: 2-Amino-4-hydroxy-6-mercaptopyrimidine (II) has been synthesized by condensation of guanidine with methyl ethoxycarbonyl-dithioacetate (I). The structure of the condensation product II has been proved (a) by desulfurization to isocytosine (III), (b) by comparison with a specimen prepared by treatment of 2-amino-4-chloro-6-hydroxypyrimidine (IV) with NaSH.The dithioester I and formamidine did not react under the same experimental conditions. The expected product, 4-hydroxy-6-mercaptopyrimidine (VII), has been obtained from 4,6-dichloropyrimidine through the following steps :4-chloro-6-methoxypyrimidine (V) and 4-chloro-6-hydroxypyrimidine (VI). The dithioester I is considerably less reactive than ethyl malonate in the reaction with the two amidines studied.

Notes: A new method for the calculation of the acid-base constants based on the pH- metry has been proposed in a previous paper. The formulas given apply particularly well in cases where the constants differ little from each other. The results obtained are satisfactory only if the concentrations of the compounds investigated are sufficiently high and the acid-base constants neither too small (less than -9) nor too high (higher than 10-3) The initial formulas have therefore been modified in order to apply to all cases. The four constants of ethyleneglycol-bis-(β-aminoethyl ether)-N, N′-tetraacetic acid are calculated using the approximative and the generalized formulas. On the other hand the constants of β,β′-diaminodiethylether-N, N′-tetra-acetic and diglycolic acids are calculated with the help of the generalized formulas.

Notes: One known and four new alkaloids have been isolated from C. durissima STAPF. Isovoacangine (VII) (first isolated from Stemmadenia), conopharyngine (VIII), and possibly also Alkaloid E are monomeric isoquinuclidine bases found in root and stem bark; conodurine and conoduramine, however, are dimeric and found only in the roots. A mild and simple method is described for the decarbomethoxylation of ester bases of the voacangine type to substances of the ibogaine type.
