Notes: Abstract The genusTrichosporon was revised using characters of morphology, ultrastructure, physiology, ubiquinone systems, mol% G+C of DNA, DNA/DNA reassociations and 26S ribosomal RNA partial sequences. A total of 101 strains was used, including all available type and authentic cultures of previously described taxa. Nineteen taxa could be distinguished, 15 of which having Q-9 coenzyme systems and 4 having Q-10. Sixteen previously described names were reduced to synonymy. One new species was described. The genus is characterized by the presence of arthroconidia. Few species possess further diagnostic morphological characters, such as the presence of appressoria, macroconidia or meristematic conidiation. The septa of two species were found to be non-perforate, while those of the remaining species contained dolipores at variable degrees of differentiation, with or without vesicular or tubular parenthesomes. All species were able to assimilate a large number of carbon compounds; visible CO2 production was absent. The genus was found to be fairly homogeneous on the basis of a phylogenetic analysis of partial 26S rRNA sequences, with the exception ofT. pullulans which proved to be unrelated. Most taxa were found to occupy well-defined ecological niches. Within the group of taxa isolated from humans, a distinction found be made between those involved in systemic mycoses and those which mainly caused public or non-public white piedras, respectively. One species was consistently associated with animals, while others came mainly from soil or water. One species was mesophilic and another psychrophilic.

Notes: Abstract The currently accepted type species of the genusTrichosporon Behrend isT. beigelii. This species has formerly been regarded as identical toT. cutaneum. However, these fungi are now known to represent separate species with different ecology. The first species described inTrichosporon wasT. ovoides, an agent of human white piedra. A neotype strain is designated for this species, while a lectotype strain is indicated forT. cutaneum. The nameT. beigelii is considered as doubtful and consequently cannot be maintained.

Notes: HPLC-Electrochemical Detector with a Carbon Fiber Working ElectrodeThe paper describes an electrochemical detector with carbon fibers as the working electrode placed perpendicularly to the flow direction. The detector performance was characterized by the detection limit for selected phenolic compounds, reproducibility, linearity and the signal dependence on the flow rate. An electrochemical in situ pretreatment of the working electrode improves sensitivity and long term stability.

Notes: Quantum Chemical Calculations on the Addition of CH3-XFX (X = 0,…,3) to Ethene. I. Semiempirical Investigations by Means of the AM1 MethodAM1 calculations are reported for the homolytical addition of CH3-XFX (X = 0,…,3) to ethene. The structures of the reactants, the products and the transition states, as well as the reaction enthalpies are described reasonably. The calculated activation barriers are significantly different from the experimental activation energies, probably because the parametrisation is not well suited for the energetics of radical species, especially radical transition states. MNDO gives similar results, MINDO/3 fails completely.

Description / Table of Contents: The Rest Potentials and the Cathodic Polarizations of Active Chrome and a Chrome Iron Alloy in Sulfuric AcidThe cathodic polarization curves and the rest potentials of active chrome and a chrome iron alloy (25,6 pct chrome) were measured in dependance of the pH-value of the electrolyte. The behavior of the rest potential deviates from that of the hydrogen electrode. By means of the factors α and β they can be explained for the deposition of hydrogen as well as for the dissolution of metal. The equation of the rest potential is \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm V}_{\rm o} = {\rm B} - \frac{{0,058}}{{2\,\alpha + \beta }} \cdot {\rm p}_{\rm H} $$\end{document} where B is a constant factor. The sum 2 α - β is usually greater than 1.In the range of the pH-values investigated the cathodic polarization curves of the deposition of hydrogen are parallel. The exchange currents calculated from the logarithmic representation of the polarization curves rise with increasing concentration of the acid and increasing content of chrome in the alloy. The evaluation of the experimental results was carried out according to theroretical principles which had been applied successfully before.

Notes: Gas chromatographic procedures are described for the determination of carboxylic acids and chlorinated anilines in water samples.Propionic acid and 2,6-difluorobenzoic acid in aqueous solution have been simultaneously alkylated and extracted by means of a continuous two-phase reaction system, and then quantitated by on-line coupled capillary gas chromatography; tetrahexyl-ammonium hydrogen sulfate was used as phase transfer catalyst and pentafluorobenzyl bromide as reagent.A factorial design approach was used to optimize on-line derivatization of aqueous propionic acid with regard to pH and concentration of phase transfer catalyst. Alkylation and extraction, under optimized conditions, followed by quantitation of the pentafluorobenzyl ester by flame ionization detection furnished a linear calibration for concentrations between 0.1 and 10 μg/ml. The relative standard deviation was 9-15 %.The continuous two-phase reaction system was also used to determine (chlorinated) anilines present in water at concentrations of 0.1-1 μg/ml; pentafluorobenzoyl chloride was used as reagent and analysis was performed by capillary gas chromatography with flame ionization or electron capture detection. The on-line acylation of p-chloroaniline was optimized with regard to pH, reagent concentration, and reaction time. The on-line reaction system worked satisfactorily for both applications, although excess reagent caused some problems with the chromatography.

Notes: Fatty acids can be conveniently derivatized in less than one minute with (chloro)alkyl chloroformates such as methyl chloroformate, 2-chloroethyl chloroformate and 2,2,2-trichloroethyl chloroformate. 2,2,2-Trichloroethyl chloroformate is the most reactive reagent, and yields a reaction product which can be sensitively detected by GC ECD (detection limit 50 ng/ml, i.e. 25 pg/injection, for C8, C10, and C12 acids). In non-aqueous media 3-picoline, N-methylpiperidine, and dimethylaminopyridine show catalytic activity comparable with that of pyridine and can, therefore, replace it. N-methylpiperidine is the best basic catalyst in aqueous media (i.e. media containing up to 40 % water).
