    Description: The Pioneer 11 and Voyager 1, 2 traversals of Saturn's inner magnetosphere provided direct information on the complex and highly structured distributions of plasma and suprathermal charged particles present in this region. The Voyager wave intruments also yielded absolute electron density measurements in certain inner magnetosphere locations; the wave data were used to evaluate the magnitudes of several wave-particle interactions. The plasma and wave measurements for 24-hr periods centered around closest approach, are summarized, pitch-angle scattering effects possibly associated wtih measured whistler mode turbulence are evaluated, and the effects of wave-particle interactions associated with electrostatic waves are discussed.

    Description: Aspects of lunar paleomagnetic and electromagnetic sounding results which appear inconsistent with the hypothesis that an ancient core dynamo was the dominant source of the observed crustal magnetism are discussed. Evidence is summarized involving a correlation between observed magnetic anomalies and ejecta blankets from impact events which indicates the possible importance of local mechanisms involving meteoroid impact processes in generating strong magnetic fields at the lunar surface. A reply is given to the latter argument which also presents recent evidence of a lunar iron core.

    Description: Detailed band models for CO2 and H2O absorption are used to reinterpret Venera 11 spectra of the transmitted sunlight at several levels in the Venus atmosphere. An effective path approximation is used to allow for scattering in the clouds. The atmospheric model has 10 layers and uses 211 CO2 and 15 H2O vibrational transitions at 5/cm resolution. The conclusion of Moroz et al. (1979) that the 0.94 micron feature of the spectra indicates a sharp maximum in the water-vapor profile near 50 km is confirmed. It is also confirmed that such a profile fails to account for the spectra in the 1.13 micron water bands.

    Description: The manner in which secular changes in the orbit of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) research satellite influence its data collecting capabilities is discussed. A brief description of the propulsion system and sensor arrays of the satellite is presented, and the susceptibility of these systems to changes in power supply due to the decline in solar activity is considered. It is pointed out that the PVO should have enough fuel to continue to transmit data until after the arrival of Comet Halley in 1986, and that, during the 1991 to 1992 period, more moderate levels of solar activity will permit more accurate measurements of thermospheric and ionospheric parameters.

    Description: Conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) of samples from the Santa Catharina iron meteorite shows the presence of the ordered iron-nickel phase with 50% Ni, tetrataenite, and of the paramagnetic iron-nickel phase with 25% Ni. The FeNi phase with 50% Ni amounts to 70% of the iron-nickel alloys. Futhermore, the CEM spectra show the presence of small peaks from one or more spinel compounds. These small peaks are more pronounced when regions near the rim of the samples are analyzed. The X-ray diffraction of different areas of the samples, both optically dark and optically light areas, shows the presence of a diffraction pattern from a single f.c.c. lattice with a lattice parameter of a=3.58A This means that the two different Fe-Ni phases seen in the CEMS analysis occupy the same lattice. The X-ray photographs also show the presence of super-structure reflections from the ordered FeNi phase, and that the orientation of the f.c.c. lattice is the same within the whole sample.

    Description: The current state of knowledge of Saturn's rings is reviewed. A brief historical introduction is given, followed by a discussion of the radial profile of the rings, ring dynamics, features without azimuthal symmetry, ring particle size distribution, and the physical properties of ring particles.     Description: Using global empirical models of Venus ionospheric conditions, the plasma flow field consistent with the horizontal momentum equation in both viscid and inviscid forms is solved for. It is found that plasma viscosity is negligible except at low altitudes and that the observed plasma flows are consistent with the inviscid solution above 300 km but are larger than the calculated flows at lower altitudes. This is probably due to downward momentum advection. The strong vertical shear in the calculated and observed flows just beyond the terminator may produce turbulence there, manifested as the observed transterminator waves in plasma density and magnetic field. The implications of ionospheric superrotation are discussed.

    Description: Laboratory data and models of sputter-induced erosion and chemical alterations in ice films are reviewed and the results are applied to icy grains and satellites exposed to magnetospheric ion bombardment. It is shown that the source of the plasma in the inner magnetosphere of Saturn is likely to be the sputter erosion of the icy objects in this region and the sputter erosion and possible stabilization of the E-ring are considered. Ion-induced polymerization is discussed as a source of the darkened rings of Uranus.

    Description: Magnetic field models for Saturn based on data obtained by the Pioneer 11, Voyager 1, and Voyager 2 spacecraft are discussed. Saturn is distinguished form earth and Jupiter by the symmetry of its internal field about its axis of rotation; however, the strong periodic modulation of Saturn's radio emission is strong evidence of some departure from axial symmetry. Analysis of energetic charged particle absorption signatures observed by Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft are consistent with axisymmetric models of Saturn's magnetic field and demonstrate that any equatorial displacement of the dipole is limited to less than 0.01 R(S). Saturn's magnetosphere appears to be intermediate in configuration to those of earth and Jupiter. An equatorial ring current of about 10 million A, confined to a 5 R(S) thick annulus with inner and outer radii of 8 and 16 R(S), has a major effect on the geometry of the outer magnetosphere. Field lines are moderately but measurably stretched out in the equatorial plane.

    Description: A preliminary summary is made from a compilation of Voyager Saturn ring data. The data base includes optical thickness radial profiles at 3.6 and 13.6 cm radio wavelength measurements, 1300 and 2640 A occultations of delta Sco, albedos in the 3000-6000 A range, time and azimuthal resolved albedo profiles, particle impacts in the G ring, and number densities of magnetospheric charged particles. Sample data tracks are provided for the A, C, and D rings and the Cassini division. Finally, the trajectory of the Voyager 2 pass through the ring system is plotted.
