    Description: A three factor (spectral, spatial, and radiometric resolution), two level (TM and MSS) analysis of variance (ANOVA) approach allowed evaluation of the effects of each factor individually and in all possible combinations. Digital classification accuracy was used as the figure of merit. Nine study sites in Washington, D.C. each of approximately 256 x 256 TM pixels, were randomly selected from the full scene for analysis. These results strongly suggest that the quantization level improvements and the addition of new spectral bands in the visible and middle IR regions (both afforded by the TM sensor design) can result in improved capabilities to accurately delineate land cover categories using a per point Gaussian maximum likelihood classifier. On the other hand, results indicate that the increase in spatial resolution to 30m does not significantly enhance classification accuracy. The spatial result points to an inherent limitation of a per point classifier and to the need to improve data analysis techniques to handle high spatial resolution data.

    Description: Advanced 3-D inelastic structural/stress analysis methods and solution strategies for more accurate and yet more cost-effective analysis of combustors, turbine blades, and vanes are being developed.     Description: The Pioneer 11 and Voyager 1, 2 traversals of Saturn's inner magnetosphere provided direct information on the complex and highly structured distributions of plasma and suprathermal charged particles present in this region. The Voyager wave intruments also yielded absolute electron density measurements in certain inner magnetosphere locations; the wave data were used to evaluate the magnitudes of several wave-particle interactions. The plasma and wave measurements for 24-hr periods centered around closest approach, are summarized, pitch-angle scattering effects possibly associated wtih measured whistler mode turbulence are evaluated, and the effects of wave-particle interactions associated with electrostatic waves are discussed.

    Description: Aspects of lunar paleomagnetic and electromagnetic sounding results which appear inconsistent with the hypothesis that an ancient core dynamo was the dominant source of the observed crustal magnetism are discussed. Evidence is summarized involving a correlation between observed magnetic anomalies and ejecta blankets from impact events which indicates the possible importance of local mechanisms involving meteoroid impact processes in generating strong magnetic fields at the lunar surface. A reply is given to the latter argument which also presents recent evidence of a lunar iron core.

    Description: The standard balloon-borne radiosonde employed for synoptic meteorology provides vertical profiles of temperature, pressure, and humidity as a function of elapsed time. These parameters are used in the hypsometric equation to calculate the geopotential altitude at each sampling point during the balloon's flight. It is important that the vertical location information be accurate. The present investigation was conducted with the objective to evaluate the altitude determination accuracy of the standard radiosonde throughout the entire balloon profile. The tests included two other commercially available pressure sensors to see if they could provide improved accuracy in the stratosphere. The pressure-measuring performance of standard baroswitches, premium baroswitches, and hypsometers in balloon-borne sondes was correlated with tracking radars. It was found that the standard and premium baroswitches perform well up to about 25 km altitude, while hypsometers provide more reliable data above 25 km.

    Description: Detailed band models for CO2 and H2O absorption are used to reinterpret Venera 11 spectra of the transmitted sunlight at several levels in the Venus atmosphere. An effective path approximation is used to allow for scattering in the clouds. The atmospheric model has 10 layers and uses 211 CO2 and 15 H2O vibrational transitions at 5/cm resolution. The conclusion of Moroz et al. (1979) that the 0.94 micron feature of the spectra indicates a sharp maximum in the water-vapor profile near 50 km is confirmed. It is also confirmed that such a profile fails to account for the spectra in the 1.13 micron water bands.

    Description: Relative spectral response data for the LANDSAT-4 and LANDSAT-4 backup multispectral scanner subsystems (MSS), the protoflight and flight models are presented and compared to similar data for the LANDSAT 1, 2 and 3 scanners. Channel (six channels per band) outputs for soil and soybean targets were simulated and compared within each band and between scanners. The principal differences between the spectral responses of the LANDSAT-4 scanners and previous scanners are discussed. The simulated LANDSAT-4 scanner outputs were 3 to 10 percent lower in the red band and 3 to 11 percent higher in the first near-IR band than previous scanners for the soybeans targets. The LANDSAT-4 scanners were generally more uniform from channel to channel within bands than previous scanners. In the upper-band edge of the red band of the protoflight scanner, one channel was markedly different (12 nm) from the rest. For a soybeans target, this nonuniformity resulted in a within-band difference of 6.2 percent in simulated outputs between channels.

    Description: The manner in which secular changes in the orbit of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) research satellite influence its data collecting capabilities is discussed. A brief description of the propulsion system and sensor arrays of the satellite is presented, and the susceptibility of these systems to changes in power supply due to the decline in solar activity is considered. It is pointed out that the PVO should have enough fuel to continue to transmit data until after the arrival of Comet Halley in 1986, and that, during the 1991 to 1992 period, more moderate levels of solar activity will permit more accurate measurements of thermospheric and ionospheric parameters.

    Description: From both scientific and applications perspectives, the usefulness of TM digital imagery is significantly determined by its radiometric characteristics. This includes both the accuracy to which the dynamic range is known and its radiometric reproducibility or precision. Results from several pre-launch tests with a 122-cm Integrating Sphere (IS) used as part of the absolute radiometric calibration experiments for the protoflight TM sensor carried on the LANDSAT-4 satellite are summarized and analyzed. Topics covered include TM radiometric calibration and sensitivity; the TM internal calibrator; and the dynamic range after calibration.
