    Notes: Complexes of Iron with Aromatic LigandsThe reaction of FeCl3 · 6 H2O with several substituted o-phenylene diamines forms complexes of the Fe(II)-ion with o-quinone diimines. Before the formation of these complexes there are a few of redox reactions between Fe(III)ions and the diamines. The Fe(III)/o-quinone diimine-complex is an intermediate which was characterized by means of spectroscopic methods. The two forms of 6-oxy-7-nitrosobenzthiazoline produce only one 1:3 complex with Fe(II)ions. Also the N-methyl-6-oxy-7-nitrosobenzthiazolium iodide forms a 1:3 complex. In the former complex the quinone-oxim-form is the ligand. The isolated complexes were characterized through elemental analysis and physical methods.

    Description: An algorithm is described for constructing the model of the Venus surface as an expansion in spherical functions. The relief expansion coefficients were obtained up to the coefficient S sub 99. The surface picture representation is given according to this expansion. The surface model constructed was used for processing radar observations. The use of the surface model allows improved agreement between the design and measured values of radar ranges.

    Description: A model for the ringlets of Saturn is proposed where concentration of material near the inner and outer radial edges of the ringlets is a natural consequence of particles in entwined elliptical orbits, with the same particles alternately defining both edges. The existence of a collisionless state where particles fly along entwined paths in a compressed helical formation on and within a toroidal surface whose meridional cross section is a very thin ellipse is explained. The cancellation of strong oblateness perturbations by an extremely weak force normal to the orbit planes and directed primarily outward from the major axis of the meridional cross section of the torus is shown, and the possibility that electric repulsion of like-charged particles could provide the expansion force preventing cross-sectional collapse is examined. The model features a large stability domain within which orbital inclinations and arguments of periapse oscillate but do not progress. Features of the model that can be tested experimentally are mentioned.

    Notes: With simple hydrodynamic concepts, a physical model is developed to describe the flow at the wall close to the impeller blade. The parameters of this model were evaluated from the large amount of data on power consumption and checked with some independent data on velocity profiles. Together with the physical insight provided by the model, it helped to obtain general relationships for power and heat transfer coefficients. Equations for the latter were developed using Lévêque's approximation. Agreement between the predicted results and the literature data of several independent studies was rather good. A method to analyze mixing or blending results is also suggested.

    Notes: Polymers filled with extending fillers, such as calcium carbonate or talc, or with reinforcing fillers, such as glass fibers or mica, are increasingly being used in a number of applications. The addition of fillers to a polymer changes the melt rheological behavior of the polymer. A knowledge of the viscosity vs. shear-rate flow curves of the filled system at various temperatures and as a function of filler parameters (such as filler type, shape, and amount) is necessary for process design, optimization, and trouble shooting. The generation of such rheological data is ezpensive and cumbersome in view of the broad range of fillers and the large numbers of filler parameters. In the present article, a unifying approach is proposed that coalesces the flow curves of filled systems of a polymer at various temperatures into a master curve that is independent of the filler parameters. An effective methods is presented to estimate the rheograms of filled systems with the use of a master curve, characteristic of a genetic resin type, knowing the melt-flow index and glass-transition temperature of the system. Master curves have been reported for filled system of low-density polyethylene, high-density polyethylene, poly-propylene polystyrene, nylons, poly(ethylene terephthalate), and polycarbonate.

    Notes: A knowledge of the complete flow curve, or rheogram, of a PVC formulation depicting the variation of the melt viscosity over industrially relevant ranges of shear rate and temperature is essential in the design of polyer-processing equipment, process optimization, and troubleshooting. These data are generated on sophisticated rheometers that are beyond the financial and technical means of most PVC processors. The only flow parameter that can be readily measured on an inexpensive apparatus is the melt flow index of the resin-mix. In the present work, a method has been proposed to estimate the rheograms of a PVC formulation at temperatures relevant to its processing conditions with the use of a master curve, knowing the melt flow index and glass-transition temperature of the formulation. A master curve that coalesces rheograms of different PVC formulations at various temperatures has been generated and proposed as a tool for estimating the flow curve.

    Description: Tentative conclusions about the origins of channels and valleys on Mars based on the consensus of investigators who have studied the problem are presented. The morphology of outflow channels is described in detail, and the morphology, distribution, and genesis of Martian valleys are addressed. Secondary modification of channels and valleys by mass-wasting phenomena, eolian processes, cratering, and mantling by lava flows is discussed. The physics of the flows needed to account for the immense volumes of Martian outflow channels is considered in detail, including the possible influence of debris flows and mudflows, glaciers, and ice sheets. It is concluded that Mars once probably possessed an atmosphere with higher temperatures and pressures than at present which played an essential role in an active hydrological cycle.

    Description: The problem of stability of asteroids is treated from the point of view of Hill's stability-concept and using Lyapunov's Characteristic Numbers. The quantitative measure of stability (S) introduced earlier is evaluated for over 300 asteroids and a surprisingly simple relation is established between the semi-major axes of some of the asteroids' orbits and S. A detailed analysis is presented of the Lyapunov Characteristic Numbers for two minor planets and the time-variation of these numbers is discussed. The technology of capture of asteroids is vitally dependent on their orbital stability, therefore, these two problems, i.e., capture and stability, are closely related. In fact, some predictable instabilities may be properly utilized to capture and/or change asteroidal orbits to accomplish collisions with the Earth.
