Notizen: This paper further illustrates the applicability of multiple internal reflectance infrared spectroscopy to the analysis of near-surface photooxidation. The results are compared with transmission infrared spectra to evaluate compositional gradients resulting from photooxidation and the influence of oxygen diffusion. The sample was a solvent-cast film of atactic, narrow distribution polystyrene, Mw of 100,000, that had been drawn to a ratio of 3.0 at 110°C by solid state coextrusion. Irradiation of these thin films, ∼25μm thickness, was performed on exposure to air at 35°C for periods of up to 6 h using a mercury source emitting at 254 nm. On photooxidation, a board peak appears at 3200-3500 cm-1, attributable to hydroperoxide formation. The most dramatic increase in the infrared spectra is found for a carbonyl band at 1730 cm-1. It appears to result from an aromatic acid group since it is shifted to 1660 cm-1 on immersion of the oxidized polystyrene films in aqueous ammonium hydroxide. It is confirmed that the photooxidation of polystyrene occurs preferentially at the surface and that this reaction rate is greatly reduced in the drawn polystyrene film.

Notizen: A poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) of M̄w 750,000 and M̄w/M̄n 5.10 in toluene solution was sheared in a Virtis-60 homogenizer. The polymer concentration was 3.0 to 12.0 g/100ml, and test temperature was 10 ± 0.5°C. The extent of degradation was measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). It was concluded that on shearing (i) the molecular weight decreases rapidly at the beginning of shearing and thereafter decreases ever more slowly toward a limiting value, (ii) the molecular weight distribution is narrowed, (iii) no degradation occurs up to 5000 rpm and thereafter increases with stirring speed, (iv) degradation is more at lower concentrations but concentration is not a sensitive variable, and (v) the chain scission occurs randomly. The Mark-Houwing relationship for PVAc in THF at 25°C was derived as [η] = 2.47 × 10-4 × M̄v0.644.

Notizen: Autoantigens that appear during spermatogenesis in the rabbit were identified using immunoadsorbent chromatography and SDS-PAGE. To identify cell-surface proteins, samples of freshly isolated, staged cells were labeled by the lactoperoxidase or Iodo-Gen iodination procedure and run on SDS-PAGE. Autoradiograms of the stained, dried gels were prepared. By correlating the band patterns in the SDS gels of immunocolumn and surface-labeled samples with the band patterns in the autoradiograms, it was possible to show when the autoantigenic proteins appeared on the cell surface. To further support the identification of membrane autoantigens, surface-labeled, staged cell samples were lysed in Triton X-100 and immunoprecipitated with antitestis cell autoantisera.Three types of autoantigens have been identified: (1) late class antigens that are present only on late spermatids and epididymal spermatozoa, but are intracellular in early stages, (2) early class antigens which occur on the surface of pachytene spermatocytes and are present throughout subsequent stages of development, and (3) early class, transient antigens, which appear on spermatogenic cells but are not present on epididymal spermatozoa.

Notizen: The nitrosation of nylon 66, with the use of four different nitrosating agents, has been investigated. By the more vigorous nitrosating reactions, heterogeneous nitrosation of nylon yarn occurs rapidly and proceeds to completion in a few hours. In this reaction the amide hydrogen is substituted by a nitroso group to give the structure By heating the nitrosated polyamides, nitrogen is evolved, and polyesters are formed. The kinetics of this change have been fully investigated. Caustic alkali reacts rapidly with nitrosated nylon. Free radicals are produced on exposure of the nitrosated nylon to visible radiation. Partial nitrosation of nylon yarns has been carried out with the use of a running threadline system; the physical properties of the resulting yarns have been examined.

Notizen: The recently developed technique of solid-state coextrusion for ultradrawing semicrystalline thermoplastics has been applied in the preparation of self-reinforced high-density polyethylene extrudates. The extrudates consist of definite core and sheath phases composed of different molecular weights (Mw) in the range of 60,000-250,000 and different molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 3.0-20). Concentric billets of two different phases were prepared for extrusion by in serting a polyethylene rod within a tubular billet of a different high-density polyethylene followed by melting the two phases to obtain bonding between them. The billet was then split longitudinally to increase extrusion speed and extruded at 120°C, 0.23 GPa through a conical die of extrusion draw ratio 25. Extrudates of high tensile modulus (38 GPa) and strength (0.50 GPa) could be produced in a steady state process at a rate near 0.25 cm/min. The tensile properties of the extrudates from either the single or concentric billets increased with average molecular weight and were insensitive to the molecular weight distribution of the constituent phases. Thermal analysis indicated a high deformation efficiency for the sheath and core phases of the extrudates by the coextrusion technique.

Notizen: Measurements on the linear thermal expansivities α∥ and α⊥ parallel and perpendicular to the extrusion direction, respectively, have been carried out between -160 and 30°C for atactic polystyrene (aPS) with extrusion ratio 1 ≤λ≤ 15 and isotactic polystyrene (iPS) with 1 ≤λ≤ 7.5. For both aPS and iPS, α∥ decreases sharply with increasing λ whereas α⊥ shows only a slight increase. Below λ = 5 the anisotropy α⊥/α∥ is nearly the same for both, but α⊥/α∥ for iPS becomes much larger at higher λ. This is accompanied by an abrupt rise in crystallinity and probably results from the increase in the number and tautness of intercrystalline tie molecules. The birefringences of aPS and iPS increase with λ and have nearly the same values for λ 〈 5. At higher λ, however, there is a sharp rise in the birefringence of iPS which is probably associated with the sudden increase in crystallinity. With an aggregate model, the chain orientation function for aPS calculated from thermal expansivity is found to be in reasonable agreement with the corresponding value obtained from birefringence.
