    Description: On November 9, 1972 Imp 7 was in the plasma sheet from 0430 to 1000 UT and detected strong earthward plasma flows. A series of nine temporal pulsations were observed to vary in bulk speed from 0 to about 1500 km/s and to occur at 15-30 minute intervals. A positive correlation exists between the speed variations and changes in the standard deviation of the magnetic field. Evident periodicity was not found corresponding to Imp 7 pulsations and other magnetospheric or solar wind data. It is felt that the pulsations may indicate that tail reconnection is unsteady in periods of 10-30 minutes.

    Description: The radiation budget of the earth on both synoptic and planetary scales by simultaneous measurement of incoming solar radiation and outgoing earth reflected (shortwave) and emitted (longwave) radiation was determined. Both fixed wide angle sampling of terrestrial fluxes at the satellite altitude, and scanned narrow-angle sampling of the radiance components, dependent on angle are used to determine outgoing radiation. Measurements of radiation are obtained in 22 different optical channels.

    Description: A blunt probe experiment for measuring electrical conductivity was flown with the STRATCOM 8 instrument package. Data were obtained by the instrument throughout the entire measurement period. A preliminary analysis of the data indicates an enhancement in conductivity associated with the krypton discharge ionization lamp, particularly in negative conductivity. The conductivity values and their altitude dependence are consistent with previous balloon and rocket results.

    Description: A model is proposed for the formation and evolution of the Earth's core which provides an adequate energy source for maintaining the geodynamo. A modified inhomogeneous accretion model is proposed which leads to initial iron and refractory enrichment at the center of the planet. The probable heat source for melting of the core is the decay of Al. The refractory material is emplaced irregularly in the lowermost mantle with uranium and thorium serving as a long lived heat source. Fluid motions in the core are driven by the differential heating from above and the resulting cyclonic motions may be the source of the geodynamo.

    Description: Infrared interferometric observations of key trace constituents of the stratosphere have been obtained. The NASA Lear Airborne Observatory with the Grumman airborne interferometer system was flown in the lower stratosphere at an altitude of 13.7 km to obtain transmission spectra in the 2800-6000 per cm region at a resolution of 2.5 per cm using the moon as a source. An atmospheric modeling program and the AFGL line parameter atlas are used to identify H2O, CH4, O3 and other trace constituents and to derive stratospheric column densities (molecules/sq cm).

    Description: Magnetospheric measurements of three-dimensional velocity distributions for positive ions and electrons in the energy range from 1 eV to 45 keV are reported which were obtained with quadrispherical Lepedeas on ISEE 1 and 2. The instrumentation is briefly described, and an extension of energy-time spectrograms to three-dimensional summaries via the use of ancillary energy-spin phase spectrograms for multiple analyzers is outlined. Macroscopic plasma parameters for two crossings of the dayside magnetopause are presented, along with a preliminary evaluation of the kinematical motions of low-energy charged particles within the terrestrial ring current. Nonmonotonic electron velocity distributions presumably related to the generation of electron cyclotron harmonic instabilities are examined. The possible signature of diffusion driven by electrostatic waves is considered, and velocity distributions of positive ions in the dawn magnetotail are investigated.

    Description: The magnetic field strength within the polar caps of the sun is an important parameter for both the solar activity cycle and for our understanding of the interplanetary magnetic field. Measurements of the line-of-sight component of the magnetic field generally yield 0.1 to 0.2 mT near times of sunspot minimum. This paper reports measurements of the polar fields made at the Stanford Solar Observatory using the Fe I line at 525.02 nm. It is found that the average flux density poleward of 55 deg latitude is about 0.6 mT peaking to more than 1 mT at the pole and decreasing to 0.2 mT at the polar cap boundary. The total open flux through either polar cap thus becomes about 3 x 10 to the 14th Wb. It is also shown that observed magnetic field strengths vary as the line-of-sight component of nearly radial fields.

    Description: The atlas has been designed to fulfill the need in solar and stellar astronomy, in aeronomy, and in space science for a convenient reference source that provides a detailed and accurate record of the measured solar ultraviolet spectrum in high spectral resolution for the wavelength range from 225.2 nm to 319.6 nm. The atlas also contains a preliminary synthetic solar spectrum with a legend for identifying and describing the features of the synthetic spectrum. Attention is given to aspects of instrumentation, the radiometric calibration, the wavelength scale, background noise random fluctuations and data filtering, intermittent noise, the observational conditions, the experimental uncertainty, the atlas format, references, tables, and plots.
