    Description: Evidence is presented for the existence of a gene, probably on the X chromosome, which prevents testis differentiation when present in 46,XY human embryos. Affected 46,XY women are not completely normal because of premature ovarian involution, as a result of which they have "streak gonads" similiar to those of 45,X women.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉German, J -- Simpson, J L -- Chaganti, R S -- Summitt, R L -- Reid, L B -- Merkatz, I R -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Oct 6;202(4363):53-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/567843" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The intracellular distribution of fluorine has been delineated in human platelets incubated with 4,6-difluoroserotonin, utilizing a scanning-transmission electron microscope equipped with an energy-loss spectrometer. Discrete intracellular structures corresponding in location to dense bodies contained high concentrations of fluorine. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy, which apparently can detect less than 10(-20) gram of fluorine in an area of 10 square nonometers, can thus localize fluorinated tracer molecules with biological activity.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Costa, J L -- Joy, D C -- Maher, D M -- Kirk, K L -- Hui, S W -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 May 5;200(4341):537-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/644312" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

    Description: Nineteen normal male subjects received 1.0 milligram of physostigmine or 1.0 milligram of saline by a slow intravenous infusion on two nonconsecutive days. Physostigmine significantly enhanced storage of information into long-term memory. Retrieval of information from long-term memory was also improved. Short-term memory processes were not significantly altered by physostigmine.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Davis, K L -- Mohs, R C -- Tinklenberg, J R -- Pfefferbaum, A -- Hollister, L E -- Kopell, B S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Jul 21;201(4352):272-4.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/351807" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Using a combination of gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and selected ion recording techniques, we have identified nicotine and its major metabolite, continine, in the breast fluid of nonlactating women smokers. As little as 25 picograms could be measured by using the deuterated variants, [5',5'-2H]nicotine and [3,3-2H]cotinine, both as internal standards and as carriers in an inverse isotope dilution method.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Petrakis, N L -- Gruenke, L D -- Beelen, T C -- Castagnoli, N Jr -- Craig, J C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Jan 20;199(4326):303-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/619458" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: High- and low-density lipoproteins carrying free cholesterol labeled with 3H or 14C were administered to a patient with a bile fistula. The free cholesterol from high-density lipoproteins was more rapidly incorporated into biliary cholesterol than the free cholesterol from low-density lipoproteins. These findings show that the liver in man selectively utilizes and secretes the free cholesterol from a particular lipoprotein.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Schwartz, C C -- Halloran, L G -- Vlahcevic, Z R -- Gregory, D H -- Swell, L -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Apr 7;200(4337):62-4.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/204996" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Eight chronic alcoholics received repeated computed tomography scans. Four, who maintained abstinence and functionally improved, showed partially reversible cerebral atrophy. Two nonabstinent patients and two abstinent patients who had completed functional improvement before the first scan showed no change in atrophy.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Carlen, P L -- Wortzman, G -- Holgate, R C -- Wilkinson, D A -- Rankin, J C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Jun 2;200(4345):1076-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/653357" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The body shapes of humans and chimpanzees were compared quantitatively by criteria chosen for their capacity to discriminate well among the body shapes of frogs. By these criteria, the difference in body shape between humans and chimpanzees was found to be greater than that between the most dissimilar pairs of frogs examined--that is, frogs classified in separate taxonomic suborders. Even though the morphological diffference between the two primates is large by frog standards, the biochemical differences between the structural genes of these two species are small. The results of this study give quantitative support to the proposal that morphological evolution and biochemical evolution in structural genes can proceed at independent rates.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Cherty, L M -- Case, S M -- Wilson, A C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Apr 14;200(4338):209-11.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/635583" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
