Notes: The intracellular levels of seven enzymes in mouse LS cells growing in suspension culture at controlled dissolved oxygen partial pressures (pO2) have been measured. During the growth of each culture large fluctuations were observed in the levels of some enzymes, particularly aldolase and cytochrome oxidase. Mean values for the concentration of each enzyme during the growth phase have been calculated. These results are discussed in relation to previous observations made on the growth of mouse LS cells.

Notes: If the transient equations of a plug flow tubular reactor are transformed into a set of corresponding ordinary differential equations, stability information for the former may be obtained graphically from knowledge about the transients of the latter. The analysis presented in this paper combines this simplification with the definitions and theorems of Weiss and Infante to propose a method of direct computation whereby transient bounds may be found for this important class of distributed-parameter chemical reactor systems.

Notes: In the hydrogenation of α-methylstyrene by means of a suspended palladium-alumina catalyst in a stirred reactor the mass transfer of hydrogen through the liquid is the rate-controlling step and the resistance to chemical reaction at the catalyst surface is negligible except at extremely rapid rates of stirring. This system therefore provides an excellent means of establishing the effects of operating variables and mechanical construction on mass transfer coefficients in liquids in stirred reactors. It is convenient to consider the total resistance to mass transfer as consisting of two separate resistaces: in the liquid adjoining the bubbles and in the liquid adjoining the suspended solid particles; thus R = Rb + Rs.A general equation was evaluated from experimental data based upon unit volume of liquid.

Notes: By using an isothermal throttling calorimeter, built for recirculating vapor operation, the effects of pressure on the enthalpy of methane and two methane-propane (93.9 and 86.2% methane) mixtures were measured. Pure methane was run at 150°F. and the two mixtures were studied at 90, 150, and 200°F. The pressures for these experiments were 500, 1,000, 1,500, and 2,000 lb./sq.in.abs.The resulting data were compared with similar data from other sources for these same systems and conditions. Agreement is good with enthalpy values obtained from both experimental volumetric and Joule-Thomson data.Prediction methods for the isothermal pressure effect on the enthalpy are compared with these data. These methods demonstrate the reliability of the Redlich-Kwong and Benedict-Webb-Rubin equations and Pitzer's corresponding states correlation for calculating isothermal enthalpy changes for these systems and conditions.

Notes: A composite phase plane is introduced in order to describe geometrically the transients of a distributed parameter system with only one physical dimension. Its intrinsic features are discussed and compared with those of the ordinary phase plane. For the plug-flow tubular reactor an equivalence is established between bounds on the reactor transients and the confinement of their projections on the composite phase plane. A constrained integration method is developed which enables one to find a region of stability for an adiabatic reactor, and a related technique is demonstrated for a nonadiabatic case. A hypothetical reactor system is analyzed numerically to illustrate the application.

Notes: Methyl methacrylate-styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers, alone and with polybutadiene modification, were examined for changes in impact strength and yellowness after thermal and light aging. The copolymer displayed no change in strength or clarity, while the butadiene-modified material showed increase in yellowness and loss in impact resistance. It is apparent that these changes are primarily due to the decomposition of the butadiene phase in the impact material, and this conclusion might be applied to diene-containing blends in general.

Notes: Mercerized cellulose in the form of 7/2 yarn was reactivated with 17.5% sodium hydroxide and then heated at 100°C. with 5 moles of trityl chloride, in pyridine, per anhydroglucose unit. The time of reaction was varied, giving ether derivatives of the cellulose containing 0.31-0.79 triphenylmethyl groups (DS) per anhydroglucose unit. Controls consisted of (1) the untreated cellulose yarn and (2) a portion subjected to all the reaction conditions except the reactant. The density of the product decreased hyperbolically with increasing substitution. The mixed x-ray pattern of the untreated control cellulose (35% cellulose I, 43% cellulose II) was largely converted by the activation treatment (10% cellulose I, 53% cellulose II). As reaction proceeded the crystal structure largely disappeared. The assumption is that substitution was confined almost exclusively to the primary hydroxyl position. The behavior of tensile stiffness, elastic recovery, and work recovery was explored at temperatures from about 25 to 225°C. Considerable improvement, which generally increased with increasing substitution, was observed in both elastic and work recovery at all temperatures studied.
