Notes: A previous paper introduced the pair-type-probability (PTP) function for use in molecular corresponding states theory. The present paper develops the predictive equations of Scatchard and Hildebrand and the correlation equations of Wohl from particular pair and triplet weighting functions for clusters of two and three molecules in a liquid mixture. The cluster-weighting idea therefore unifies the major prediction and correlation schemes now in engineering use.

Notes: There are four points of flexibility in present molecular formulations of the corresponding states idea. At these points the procedure followed or the numerical values can be tailored to achieve better agreement between predicted and experimental properties without violation of physical principles. These flexibilities are the exponent values used in the pair-potential function, the averaging procedure used to obtain an effective mixture pair-potential function, the combination rule for unlike-pair parameters, and the selection of a reference substance. The first two flexibilities are used in this paper to show that the conformal-parameter equations can correlate excess free energy and activity coefficient data of highly nonideal liquid mixtures. A pair-type-probability function is introduced in the averaging procedure used to obtain a mixture pair-potential function. Any macroscopic or molecular property may be used in this weighting function to improve mixture-property prediction.

Notes: Methods are presented for the determination of the transient values of the vaporization efficiencies from the knowledge of various combinations of the transient values of operating variables. For the case where the temperature and the composition of the liquid phase for each plate are known, a direct solution for the vaporization efficiencies is presented. Also, a method is presented for the determination of the mixing parameters of a generalized plate model on the basis of known transient values of certain operating variables.

Notes: Data correlations are presented for equilibrium adsorption of pure hydrocarbon vapors and their mixtures. The systems represented are C1 to C4 hydrocarbons (olefins and paraffins) on gas-adsorbent grades of activated charcoal. The mixture data are limited to binary and ternary gas systems. The adsorption conditions represented among the correlated data cover ranges of 77° to 175°F. temperature and 0 to 100 lb./sq. in. gauge. With the use of empirical adsorption constants, a common correlation of specific adsorption capacity for the various hydrocarbons is presented; it applies for either pure components or their mixtures. A correlation is given also for adsorption relative volatilities. Approximate adsorption heats, a limited amount of high-temperature steam adsorption data, and sample calculations on applications of the correlations are included. The prediction methods are recommended for adsorption conditions up to 250°F. and 250 lb/sq. in. gauge for the particular systems studied.

Notes: Mutual diffusion coefficients in dilute liquid metal solutions have been correlated by methods based upon absolute rate theory and the theory of corresponding states. Both correlations reproduce the experimental data to approximately ±25%, but the absolute rate theory method is simpler to use and is applicable to a larger number of systems.

Notes: The attractive nuclear properties of zirconium make it a highly desirable core material for sodium-cooled reactors. The elevated temperature strength while low is sufficient for certain applications. Development of higher strength alloys is underway. Sodium in itself is completely compatible with zirconium; however, the nonmetallic contaminants, namely oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen, can effect serious damage. The primary problem in the use of zirconium in a sodium system, then, lies in controlling these impurities in the sodium.

Notes: The generalized model accounts for the effects of channeling, transfer lag, mixing, and mass transfer that occur on each plate of a column in the process of separating a multi-component mixture at unsteady state operation. The equations required to describe the model were tested by solving a wide variety of numerical examples. Selected numerical results are presented to demonstrate certain characteristics and uses of the generalized model.

Notes: Fifteen alcohol-soluble carbohydrates have been isolated from logphase cultures of Tetrahymena. Preliminary results obtained by parallel chromatography of impure extracts indicate that some of the soluble components were 2-D-deoxyribose, ribose, mannose, fructose, arabinose, xylose, and glucose. Another elution gradient with extracts from cells washed several times, indicates that maltose and glucose were the only identifiable components as compared with 18 known standards. Differences were observed in the alcohol-soluble carbohydrate content in log-phase versus stationary-phase cells. For example, it is clearly indicated that component 13 is missing in stationary-phase cells while component 15 is missing in log-phase cells. Fifteen alcohol-soluble carbohydrates have been chromatographed from synchronized cells. All of these compounds show cyclic variation in relation to cell division. Component 13 accumulates in cells blocked in morphogenesis and decreases as oral development proceeds in synchronized cells.

Notes: Experiments will be described which demonstrate that the product of purified “Qβ-replicase” is fully competent to serve both as a template and as a program for the synthesis of complete virus particles. The use of mutant RNA has permitted the demonstration that nucleic acid is the instructive agent in the replication process and hence satisfies the definition of a self-duplicating entity. Methods have been devised to examine the product both physically and biologically with a minimum of manipulation and with complete recovery of product and input template. A detailed analysis of every interval of synthesis has thus become possible. These technical advances have permitted us to demonstrate the existence of a latent period prior to the appearance of the first new complete infectious RNA molecules. Further, this latent period is accompanied by an eclipse of the input templates as infectious agents. The use of electrophoretic separation on acrylamide gels has yielded a detailed account of both templates and early product during the latent period, with the consequent identification of the intermediate stages. The resulting data and their implications for the mechanism of RNA replication will be discussed.
