    Notes: A study of thermal effects accompanying exothermic hard rubber reaction with the help of differential thermal analysis has been extended to 68/32 rubber-sulfur compounds containing different metallic oxides and metallic oxide-accelerator combinations. Metallic oxides do not affect the heat of reaction appreciably; however, they affect the slope value, litharge showing an unusually low value. In combination with accelerator, metallic oxides exert specific effects on heat of reaction, initiation temperature, and slope value. Attempts have been made to explain these findings on the basis of the known behavior of the individual oxides and the accelerators.

    Notes: The effects of the different fillers i.e., china clay, light magnesium carbonate, Pliolite S6E, and ebonite dust, on the exothermic hard rubber reaction has been studied with the help of differential thermal analysis. The data for heat evolution show some unexpected features in that china clay, a more or less inert filler, lowers heat evolution. The behavior of magnesium carbonate also can not be fully explained. Attempts have been made to explain the data for Pliolite S6E and ebonite dust on the basis of their composition and effects of the individual components on heat of reaction. The differences in initiation temperature and slope values have been explained.

    Notes: The method of differential thermal analysis has been applied to the study of thermal effects accompanying exothermic vulcanization reaction in hard rubber compounds accelerated with common rubber accelerators. Exothermic reaction was found to start at about 1% sulfur, in the case of CBS-accelerated compound which increases linearly up to 32% and then decreases, probably due to predominance of a dehydrogenation reaction. 68/32 Rubber-sulfur compounds containing increasing amounts of combined sulfur evolve decreasing quantity of heat and a plot of ΔH vs. combined sulfur of the precured compounds shows three stages of reaction. Accelerators were found not to affect the heat of reaction of the compounds to a great extent except in the special cases of those containing MBT and ZDC. The beneficial effect of certain accelerators is to be traced in the lowering of initiation temperatures and a decrease of slope values whereby the reaction becomes more regulated and spread out. Increase of concentration of accelerators (CBS and TMT) was found to have little effect.

    Notes: The concentration dependence of the reduced viscosity has been studied for several polyelectrolytes in conductivity water. It is shown that the viscosity maximum previously reported for polyelectrolyte solutions without added electrolyte can be explained either by the presence of ionic impurities in the solvent or by the contamination of the solutions. It is concluded that the folding chain theory of polyelectrolyte solutions requires amendment to account for the experimental results on counterion association. A suggested amendment to the theory implies that the application of the Huggins equation to the concentration dependence of polyelectrolyte solutions in the presence of added electrolyte may not lead to information concerning the interactions between the polyions in solution.

    Notes: The effect of high strain on the oxidative stress relaxation of several natural rubber vulcanizates has been investigated. In the case of peroxide and CBS accelerated vulcanizates, the rate of stress relaxation increases with increasing strain, and this increase appears to be due to an increase in the rate of oxidation of the network. TMTD and MBT vulcanizates showed marked premature failure at high strains and no oxidative stress relaxation measurement could be made. It was found that the tensile strength of a TMTD vulcanizate was at least 20% higher in vacuum than in oxygen, due, it is believed, to stress-induced oxidative degradation at the tip of surface flaws in the rubber.

    Notes: The dilute solution viscosity properties of fractions of two linear and one branched sample of polyvinyl acetate in benzene and of two linear and one branched fraction in several solvents were measured at 35°C. Values of total slope, b (from plots of ηsp/c vs. c), and intrinsic viscosities were obtained under the requirement that k′ + β = 0.500 ± 0.002. Empirical plots of log b vs. log [η] gave lines which were straight within the limits of accuracy of the data. For the linear fractions in benzene, Huggins' k′ was constant and the slope of the log b vs. log [η] line was 2; for the branched fractions in benzene, k′ increased with [η] and the slope of the log b vs. log [η] line was greater than 2. The log b vs. log [η] plots form the basis for a “one-point” method for determining [η]. Consideration of these data along with results reported in the literature indicates that k′ is measurably sensitive to branching only for fractions possessing a certain minimum combination of size and complexity. However, in some cases where the variations of k′ are inconclusive, use of the slope of the log b vs. log [η] line may provide a reliable indication of branching. It was found that a comparison between the branched and linear series could also be made at constant values of [η] or b. Two linear fractions in different solvents obeyed a type of Huggins relationship in which k′ did not vary with solvent and the slope of the log b vs. log [η] line was 2. For a higher molecular weight branched fraction, however, k′ varied from solvent to solvent and the slope of the log-log plot was about 1.7. These data do not support a reference point concept of “true” intrinsic viscosity based on a simple linear relationship between b and [η]. Preliminary results dealing with the effects of the shear rate indicated that the measured viscosity properties of branched fractions may be more seriously affected by changes in shear rate than those of linear fractions.
