Notes: The dynamic moduli and loss factors have been determined for high molecular samples of GR-S and natural rubber. Comparison of the two sets of data shows that the general characteristics of the two materials are quite similar. The main differences are that GR-S shows a higher temperature for the apparent second order transition, and also a higher value for the modulus in the relatively level portion of the highly elastic region. The usual superposition procedures are used for correlating the data. Several indications that the equivalence of frequency and temperature may not be of universal applicability are noted. It is suggested that the higher elastic plateau modulus of GR-S my, in conjunction with usual levels of vulcanization, lead to a modulus dispersiion with its attendant loss and thus be a contributing factor to the lower resilience and higher heat development characteristic of GR-S.

Notes: The effect of various added simple electrolytes upon the solution viscosity of polymethacrylic acid and hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile was studied. The viscosity behavior of these polymers in water and in the presence of added NaCl was typical of that of polyelectrolytes. The addition of multivalent anions (sulfate, diacid phosphate, oxalate, and succinate) to solutions of polymethacrylic acid decreasesd the viscosity at low added salt concentrations, but a reversal in the reduced viscosity-concentration curve was obtained as the ionic strength was increased. This increase in viscosity can be partly explained on the basis of increased ionization originating from the behavior of the added multivalent anions. However, this is not the complete explanation since the relative efficiency of these anions in increasing the viscosity is not consistent with the values of the dissociation constants. A possible alternative explanation involves the formation of associated complexes of the polyions. It is further demonstrated that the limiting intrinsic viscosities at infinite ionic strength is dependent upon the initial polymer charge.

Notes: Summary Gene fusions between the β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene and the promoters of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S RNA transcript (CaMV 35S) and the mannopine synthase (mas) genes were introduced into rapeseed varieties via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Fluorometric assay of β-glucuronidase activity indicated different expression patterns for the two promoters. In seedlings, the CaMV 35S promoter had maximum activity in the primary roots, while the mas promoter was most active in the cotyledons. Etiolated seedlings cultured in the dark showed reduced activity of the mas promoter. Before vernalization at the rosette stage, both promoters were more active in older plant parts than in younger ones. At this stage the highest activity was recorded in cotyledons. After the plants had bolted reduced promoter function was detected in the upper parts of the transformed plants. Both promoters were found to be functional in the majority of the studied organs of transgenic rapeseed plants, but the promoter activity varied considerably between the organs at different developmental stages. The ability of pollen to transfer the introduced genes to other varieties and related species (e.g. Brassica napus and Diplotaxus muralis) by cross-pollination was studied in greenhouse experiments, and field trials were carried out to estimate the distance for biologically-relevant gene dispersal. In artificial crossing, the introduced marker gene was transferable into other varieties of Brassica napus. In field trials, at a distance of 1 metre from the source of transgenic plants, the frequency of an outcrossing event was relatively high (10-3). Resistant individuals were found at 16 and 32 metres from the transgenic pollen donors, but the frequency of an outcrossing event dropped to 10-5.

Description / Table of Contents: Acid-Resisting Steels in the Production of Wood-VinegarThe chemical wear of steel by the production of wood-vinegar is bigger than that by the production of vinegar of fermentation. It is caused by the content of homologous acids and empyreumatic substances.A steel alloyed with Cr 18%, Ni 10% and Mo 2% failed at places of biggest wear though generally used for this acetic acid. Improvement was attempted by steels of higher Cr and Ni contents. The best results were achieved by a steel alloyed with 27% of Cr, 4,5% of Ni and 1,5% of Mo which has been employed in the Swedish cellulose-industry. According to laboratory-experiments this steel is completely resistant over the whole range of concentration and temperature up to the boiling point. It consists of very little austenit and displays greater temper. Nevertheless it can be welded and worked up easily.
