Notes: Matrix structures are increasingly used in organisations as they become more complex and as the pace of change increases. They are similar to project management arrangements, although matrix structures may be a permanent feature. Matrix structures, like project management, involve the creation and management of multi-disciplinary teams. The team leaders have a dual reporting relationship. For the structures to work effectively they should only be introduced when appropriate and even then after careful planning. An important aspect is the training of multi-disciplinary team leaders. However, it can also be crucial to ensure that those other key members of management who need to monitor and support matrix structures are properly selected and have received appropriate management training.

Notes: In this two-part article the problems of operating employee appraisal schemes effectively are identified. Appraisal of formal appraisal schemes suggests that most do not operate satisfactorily. Multi-purpose schemes can be cumbersome and include conflicting objectives. The feedback process can also cause major problems. Such problems can be exacerbated with schemes of 360-degree appraisal according to their complexity and the role conflicts they can precipitate. In the second part of the article the level of organisational investment needed for schemes to operate effectively is considered. The ways in which competencies, self-appraisal, and peer audit can be constructively used are examined. Competencies developed for selection purposes may be usefully applied in appraisal, provided they are accurate. The crucial link between formal and informal appraisal processes is considered as is the importance and skills involved in informal appraisal. Finally, the way in which the training needs of appraisees need to be realistically identified and assessed is explained.

Notes: Organizational change initiatives are successful only through the efforts of the people, so it is important to look beyond surface reactions and understand the deeper implications of employees' visible work habits. By integrating work from several disciplines, this paper poses a series of questions aimed at creating better awareness of differences in how and why people work. Historic tracking of beliefs about work in the USA is provided as an example of how a positive foundation of strong work ethic can become the dysfunctional extreme of workaholism.

Notes: Over the past six months, much of the commercial real estate activity across markets has been comprised of lease renewals, many with restructured terms to capitalise on the tenant's favourable position in the marketplace. With mounting optimism of an economic recovery on the horizon, this trend is increasing as scores of corporate space users are renewing existing leases to take advantage of rates before the pendulum swings back in the landlord's favour. Although a renewal and restructure could potentially deliver significant occupancy cost savings, only those carefully considered and effectively negotiated offer tenants the most significant long-term benefits. This paper provides guidelines for corporate tenants to determine whether a lease restructure is feasible and offers strategies for negotiating the best possible terms.

Notes: This study examines the valuation methods for publicly and privately managed heritage assets in Australia. A critical examination of methods exposes the weakness of traditional measurement methods for valuing heritage assets. A major problem is that traditional methods rely on an identifiable cost or an active market as their basis, factors generally absent when valuing heritage assets. In addition, traditional methods do not capture the intrinsic value of heritage assets. This study applies the more innovative non-traditional measurement methods of Travel Costs and Contingent Valuation. The results suggest that these methods can be more usefully applied to value heritage assets. They are not constrained by the requirements of an identifiable cost or active market and the Contingent Valuation method is capable of capturing total values. The implications of incorporating more than a narrow, purely economic value can be applied to policy makers and management decisions in terms of maintenance and preservation of these heritage assets. The application can also extend current reporting of heritage assets values to include social and environmental aspects in line with the growing movement towards triple bottom line reporting and sustainability.
