Summary 1. An investigation has been made into the .exchange reactivity of the hydrogen atoms of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons under the action of sulfuric acid2, the hydrocarbons studied being heptane, dodecane, 3-methylgentane, 3-methylhexane, 2,2-dimethylhexane, 2,2,3-trimethyLbutane, and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane. 2. It has been established that only hydrocarbons containing a tertiary carbon atom enter into the exchange reaction with heavy sulfuric acid. For these hydrocarbons, exchange equilibrium is attained in a few hours at 20–25. 3. It has been established that hydrogen atoms in saturated .cyclic hydrocarbons containing tertiary carbon atoms have high mobility and are able to undergo exchange with deuterium in presence of heavy sulfuric acid.
