Beschreibung: We used high-resolution in situ measurements of turbidity and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) to quantitatively estimate the tidally driven exchange of mercury (Hg) between the waters of the San Francisco estuary and Browns Island, a tidal wetland. Turbidity and FDOM—representative of particle-associated and filter-passing Hg, respectively—together predicted 94 % of the observed variability in measured total mercury concentration in unfiltered water samples (UTHg) collected during a single tidal cycle in spring, fall, and winter, 2005–2006. Continuous in situ turbidity and FDOM data spanning at least a full spring-neap period were used to generate UTHg concentration time series using this relationship, and then combined with water discharge measurements to calculate Hg fluxes in each season. Wetlands are generally considered to be sinks for sediment and associated mercury. However, during the three periods of monitoring, Browns Island wetland did not appreciably accumulate Hg. Instead, gradual tidally driven export of UTHg from the wetland offset the large episodic on-island fluxes associated with high wind events. Exports were highest during large spring tides, when ebbing waters relatively enriched in FDOM, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and filter-passing mercury drained from the marsh into the open waters of the estuary. On-island flux of UTHg, which was largely particle-associated, was highest during strong winds coincident with flood tides. Our results demonstrate that processes driving UTHg fluxes in tidal wetlands encompass both the dissolved and particulate phases and multiple timescales, necessitating longer term monitoring to adequately quantify fluxes.

Notizen: Abstract A general theory of the drying of frozen tissue is developed and applied to the measurement of the drying rate of frozen guinea pig liver. It is shown that for a given temperature of the subliming ice crystals the mininum drying time of a piece of guinea pig liver is greater than the minimum sublimation time of a piece of ice of the same size and shape by a factor of the order of one thousand. This fact has many implications in the design of freeze-dry apparatus which will be developed in a following paper.

Notizen: Summary Low yield in seed crops of perennial ryegrass is related to low fertilization efficiency and low temperature during anthesis. To study the effect of genotype and temperature on pollen performance, we conducted greenhouse experiments at controlled temperatures. Individual florets of four genotypes that are known to differ in seed production were hand pollinated at four temperatures (14°, 18°, 22°, 26° C) both in vivo and via a semiin-vitro method involving excised florets on agar. Pollen germination and tube growth were determined with UV-fluorescence microscopy and scored in six classes at 2 h after pollination in vitro and after 0.5, 2 and 5 h in vivo. In vitro, both genotype and temperature had a significant effect on the performance of self-pollen. Pollen tube growth increased with temperature. In cross-pollinations, the pistil parent had a significant effect on pollen tube growth, and there was also a significant pistil-by-temperature interaction. In vivo, genotype and temperature significantly affected pollen performance. The genotype-by-temperature interaction was only significant 5 h after pollination. One genotype with low seed yield was pseudoself-compatible and was a relatively poor mother after cross-pollination. The effects of genotype and temperature on the growth of self-pollen might be exploited in a breeding programme.

Notizen: Abstract Old-growth stands of red spruce (Picea rubens) were sampled at the only four localities in the mountains of southwestern Virginia and central West Virginia where examples of such are known to exist. Based upon mean ages (±SE) of cored trees, sampled stands ranged in age from 164±18 to 201±10 yr. Dendro-ecological (tree-ring) analysis showed a marked decline in growth of trees at three localities during the late 1800s, followed by recovery to previous levels of growth within two decades. This growth-trend decline generally coincides with a period of extensive mortality of red spruce reported to have occurred in central West Virginia. Basal area of trees ≥2.5 cm DBH ranged from 35.4 to 46.1 m2/ha. These figures are considerably lower than those recorded at earlier dates for similar old-growth stands in the Appalachians, which suggests that a general decline has occurred over the last half-century.

Notizen: Abstract Early attention to the modeling of heme proteins is enhancing the understanding of biochemistry. Those studies are also contributing to the development of techniques for the modeling of still more intricate, multifunctional, variously selective natural systems. Selectivity in simple systems may involve the molecular capability to bind only one of a family of related species or it may mean the ability to select and control one of a number of possible functions of a given bound species. Complicated systems simultaneously combine the two kinds of simple selectivities for two or more different classes of guest, often with synergistic interrelationships. The subject is developed around examples of binary, tertiary, and quarternary complexes designed to model the behavior of monooxygenases.

Notizen: Summary Twenty two serogenetic systems were investigated in 115 Tibetans and 128 Himachalis from the state of Himachal Pradesh, north-west India. For eight of the loci (ABO, Rh, MNSs, P, Fy, 6PGD, EsD, and AK) the two populations showed conclusive heterogeneity and their frequency distribution showed that the serogenetic differences between two populations are due to their different racial affliations. The Tibetans were also analysed for their genetic relationship with certain selected populations from the Cis-Himalayan, far east and south Asian regions. The calculations of the Harpending's kinship matrix R and the genetic distances showed that the Tibetans are closer to the mongoloid populations of the Cis-Himalayan region and the differences in the present day population structure of the mongoloid groups of this region are more likely to be due to differential migration, admixture and racial affliation although there is a slight possibility of disruptive selection for certain loci such as 6PGD and AK which showed an exceptionally high value of Canning (6PGD *C) andAK *1 genes.
