Notes: The activities of the constant proportion enzymes of the Embden-Meyerhof chain (triose phosphate isomerase (TIM), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK), phosphoglycerate mutase (PGM) and enolase (ENOL)), and the activity of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) were studied in developing red (trapezius) and white (longissimus) muscles of the pig from a fetal stage to 24 weeks postnatal. Both muscles were differentiated by two weeks postnatal in the sense that they had reached the adult level of enzyme activity. Enzyme activities were two- to three-fold greater in the longissimus than in the trapezius. Enzyme activity ratios based on GAPDH were not consistent in the fetal and day 1 samples but were consistent during later stages of growth. Ratios of enzyme activity based on activity at 105 days gestation revealed that TIM, PGK and PGM are grouped and follow the same pattern, but GAPDH and ENOL are quite different from each other and from the pattern shown by TIM, PGK and PGM. The constant proportion concept in developing muscle is therefore questioned.

Notes: Agglutinability with Concanavalin was studied as function of cell cycle transition in normal and SV40 virus transformed 3T3 cells. In synchronized cultures of normal cells, agglutinbility was high during mitosis and disappeared rapidly. Agglutinability of transformed cells remained high in G1 phase but diminished gradually upon entering S phase and reached minimum in G1 phase. Decreased agglutinability a the end of the cell cycle was also observed in synchronous SV3T3 cultures by a combined technique of haemadsorption and density gradient centrifugation. In normal 3T3 cells, similar variations in agglutin ability during interphase could not be observed.

Description: Research on the primary cosmic radiation and solar cosmic rays from the Luna 10, 11, and 12 artificial lunar satellites is reviewed. Data on the vertical distribution of cosmic rays above the moon's surface are presented, and the albedo for the primary radiation is determined. The fluxes of electrons with energies from 30 to 300 keV were registered in the solar cosmic rays. Rapid variations of the electron flux were observed. The angular distributions of 0.5-10 MeV protons moving together with the corpuscular streams responsible for Forbush decreases were investigated.

Description: When dispersed or mixed immiscibles are solidified on earth, a large amount of separation of the constituents takes place due to differences in densities. However, when the immiscibles are dispersed and solidified in zero-gravity, density separation does not occur, and unique composite solids can be formed with many new and promising electrical properties. By measuring the electrical resistivity and superconducting critical temperature of zero-g processed Ga-Bi samples, it has been found that the electrical properties of such materials are entirely different from the basic constituents and the ground control samples. The finest dispersions are obtained only in a low-gravity environment. Our results indicate that space-processed immiscible materials may form an entirely new class of electronic materials. The interesting electrical properties of directionally solidified Al-Cu eutectic, a two-component alloy consisting of Al and Al2Cu which was processed on Skylab (M566) are briefly reviewed. The electrical resistivity of directionally solidified eutectics with a lamellar structure are highly anisotropic and have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. The local resistivity of the space-processed samples are compared to a ground control sample and to the expected theoretical results.

Description: The activity of carbon in the two-phase regions - W + WC and W + W2C was obtained from the carbon content of iron rods equilibrated with mixtures of metal plus carbide powders. From this activity data the standard free energies of formation of WC and W2C were calculated. The temperature of the invariant reaction W2C = W + WC was fixed at 1570 + or - 5K. Using available solubility data for C in solid W, the partial molar free energy of C in the dilute solid solution was also calculated. The heat of solution of C in W, and the excess entropy for the interstitial solid solution, were computed, assuming that the carbon atoms reside in the octahedral interstices of bcc W.

Description: To represent the loads spectra of general aviation aircraft operating in the Continental United States, VG and VGH data collected since 1963 in eight operational categories were processed and analyzed. Adequacy of data sample and current operational categories, and parameter distributions required for valid data extrapolation were studied along with envelopes of equal probability of exceeding the normal load factor (n sub z) versus airspeed for gust and maneuver loads and the probability of exceeding current design maneuver, gust, and landing impact n sub z limits. The significant findings are included.

Description: A formula is obtained for the solubility of oxygen in solid Mo, determined in the range from 1400 to 1900 C by equilibrating rods of zone-refined Mo with mixtures of Mo and MoO2 powders. Using the known value of the free energy of formation of MoO2, a formula is obtained for the chemical potential of oxygen in the dilute solid solution. The heat of solution of oxygen in solid Mo and the excess entropy for the interstitial solid solution are also determined, assuming that the oxygen atoms reside in the octahedral interstices of bcc Mo.
