    Notes: Abstract Cross sections for the reactionse + e −→e + e − (Bhabha scattering) ande + e −→γγ are measured for center-of-mass (c.m.) energies $$\sqrt s $$ between 12.0 and 34.6 GeV. The results agree with the predictions of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and the cut-off parameters are determined. From Bhabha scattering at the highest energy, $$\left\langle {\sqrt s } \right\rangle = 34.6 GeV$$ , the 1 δ limits 0.12〈sin2 ϑ w 〈0.38 are obtained for the weak mixing angle. The higher order (α3) QED processese + e −→e + e −γ ande + e −→γγγ are also studied and are found to agree with the α3 QED predictions. A search for excited electrons is carried out by investigating the (e ±γ) invariant mass distribution in the reactione + e −→e + e −γ.

    Notes: Abstract The mean charged multiplicity as well as its distribution has been measured as a function of c.m. energy in the reactione + e −→hadrons. Fragmentation models are compared with the data. After applying radiative corrections the mean charged multiplicity is measured to be 8.4±0.3±0.6 at 12 GeV, 13.1±0.3±0.6 at 30 GeV and 13.6±0.3±0.6 at 35 GeV. The ratio of mean charged multiplicity to the dispersion (〈N ch〉/D ch) is almost constant in the energy range studied, indicating KNO scaling of the charged multiplicity. The inclusive differential cross sections(dσ/dx p ) shows scaling violation in the highx p region (x p 〉0.15). The absolute value of the scaling violation is consistent with the result of 2nd order QCD calculations. The production of neutral kaons has been investigated by identifying the decayK S 0 →π+π−. The production probability for a strange quark relative to that of au ord quark in the fragmentation, γ s , has been determined to be 0.27±0.03±0.05 averaged over c.m. energies from 12 to 35 GeV. Momentum spectra for neutral kaons are presented and are compared with model predictions.

    Notes: Summary The use of cimetidine administered by bolus intravenous injection to critically ill patients has been associated with serious cardiac arrhythmias, due presumably to high initial plasma concentrations. The aim of this study was to determine the range of infusion times of a single 200 mg dose of cimetidine which would avoid high initial drug concentrations while maintaining a duration of effective concentrations no less than that resulting from bolus injection. Computer simulations of both maximum plasma cimetidine concentrations and duration of effective plasma cimetidine concentrations versus duration of infusion were based on mean pharmacokinetic date from 6 peptic ulcer patients who had received cimetidine 200 mg i.v. over 5 min. The simulations indicated that to reduce maximum plasma cimetidine concentrations by at least 50%, while maintaining the duration of effective plasma concentrations, the infusion time should be at least 30 min and no longer than 4.5 h. The validity of the simulations was subsequently tested in 4 of the patients, who received cimetidine 200 mg i.v. over 30 min. The mean maximum plasma concentration for the 30 min infusion (4.57±0.53 µg/ml) was, as predicted, approximately half that corresponding to bolus administration in these patients (8.97±1.96 µg/ml). Moreover, the duration of effective concentrations for the infusion (1.43±0.28 h) was significantly greater than that for the 5 min infusion (1.21±0.31 h). We suggest that where an acute intravenous dose of cimetidine (200 mg) is indicated, it should be administered over at least 30 min rather than as a bolus.

    Notes: Summary Since little is known of the number and types of binding sites on α1-acid glycoprotein (AAG) and because drug-drug protein binding interactions often fail to fit a simple model, a study of the effect of 9 known AAG binding drugs on lidocaine free fraction (LFF) was performed. Serum was obtained from 10 healthy males, pooled and various concentrations (from 0.15 to 1 000 µg/ml) of amitriptyline, bupivacaine, chlorpromazine, disopyramide, imipramine, meperidine, nortriptyline, propranolol and quinidine were added. LFF was determined by equilibrium dialysis at an initial lidocaine concentration of 2.0 µg/ml. LFF increased from 0.30±0.019 (mean ± SD) in the absence of displacing agents to maximum values ranging from 0.59 (nortriptyline) to 0.73 (bupivacaine). Plots of LFF vs. the logarithm of displacing drug concentration yielded simple sigmoidal curves in all cases. LFF was increased 50% by an initial bupivacaine concentration of 6.0 µg/ml with all other drugs requiring more than 10 µg/ml to increase LFF to that extent. Lidocaine binding in a 4.5 g/dl albumin solution was unaffected by concentrations of quinidine, meperidine, nortriptyline and bupivacaine up to 200 µg/ml. Addition of AAG to serum reduced LFF as expected. A plot of the reciprocal of bound drug concentration vs. the reciprocal of free drug concentration in the presence and absence of quinidine suggested a competitive binding interaction. These data indicate that the binding interactions between lidocaine and the various displacing compounds are not significantly complicated by cooperative effects and that, with the possible exception of bupivacaine, displacement of lidocaine by any of these drugs is unlikely to be of clinical significance.

    Notes: Conclusions The accuracy of the x-ray radiometric method of determining the mass fractions of Fe2O3 in refractory clays satisfies the technical requirements (the studies were carried out over the concentration range from 0.8 to 6%). The accuracy of the determination of the mass fraction of A12O3 according to the method given here is close to that of the chemical analysis. It can be improved by determining the concentration of A12O3 in the clays from a few (3–5) tablets made from the same sample followed by homogenization, or by using tablets of a more constant density, which necessitates using an increased pressure. The productivity of the modernized analyzer is 150–200 samples per shift when serviced by one or two operatives. The grinding of the sample to a grain size of ∼ 44μm remains the labor-intensive link in the processing chain. The accuracy and high speed of the x-ray radiometric method of analyzing refractory clays makes it possible to use this method for production monitoring and to introduce it in the future for the certification of refractory raw materials. Because a radioactive cadmium-109 isotope is used in the BRA-7M analyzer, the stability of the radiation source over the calculated period of the half-life of the isotope is improved, and this, of course, increases the accuracy of the determination of the mass fraction of the component in the raw material. The use of the isotope necessitates some safety measures and therefore it would only be reasonable to install the BRA-7M analyzer in enterprises where the annual volume of testing is 25,000 samples or more.

    Notes: Summary In a pot study, flooding reduced growth of loblolly pine (LP) seedlings and caused an imbalance of nutrients, particularly Fe, in the tops. Swamp tupelo (ST) suffered none of these problems. Also under anaerobiosis, LP roots leaked 85 percent of total ethanol production into solution whereas ST leaked only 55 percent. Application of phosphorus increased LP growth under flooded and drained conditions but ST only under drained conditions. The differential response of the two species to flooding suggests that poor energetics and the leaky nature of LP roots under anaerobiosis restricts its growth in such habitats. Application of phosphorus (P) appears to amend these conditions in LP by reducing moisture stress, reducing nutrient imbalances, and improving energetics in older seedlings. Our results confirm that ST, the hydrophyte, avoids the problems of soil flooding via adaptations in anaerobic metabolism and oxidation of the rhizosphere.

    Notes: Abstract Sound generated underwater by wind waves displays two sensitivities to wind speed depending on whether the waves are breaking. A historical review is presented of several experimental studies over the years, as well as new results obtained at a relatively quiet, deep equatorial Pacific site. The duration of the experiment, the multiple high frequency bands as well as the desirable acoustic attributes of the site are useful in establishing the wind sensitivity, and its variability. The results are compared to a recent theoretical model of sound generation by oscillating bubbles in breaking waves.
