Description: The dynamic synthesis of a helicopter is reported. The method of approach is a variation of the component mode synthesis in the sense that it regards the aircraft as an assemblage of interconnected substructures. The equations of motion are derived in general form by means of the Lagrangian formulation in conjunction with an orderly kinematical procedure that takes into account the superposition of motion of various substructures, thus circumventing constraint problems.

Description: Malin's (1975) gravitational theory, which was recently shown by Lindblom and Nester (1975) to be incorrect, is modified by means of a recently proposed method for obtaining viable gravitational theories. The resulting self-consistent theory, which is in effect a Rastall-type modification of the Einstein theory, exhibits nonconservation of momentum, yet agrees with all experimental limits known to date within the post-Newtonian approximation framework.

Description: The possibility of a Brans-Dicke scalar-tensor gravitation theory with a negative coupling constant is considered. The admissibility of a negative-coupling theory is investigated, and a simplified cosmological solution is obtained which allows a negative derivative of the gravitation constant. It is concluded that a Brans-Dicke theory with a negative coupling constant can be a viable alternative to general relativity and that a large negative value for the coupling constant seems to bring the original scalar-tensor theory into close agreement with perihelion-precession results in view of recent observations of small solar oblateness.

Description: Transformation of statistics from a dimensional set to another dimensional set involves linear functions of the original set of statistics. Similarly, linear functions will transform statistics within a dimensional set such that the new statistics are relevant to a new set of coordinate axes. A restricted case of the latter is the rotation of axes in a coordinate system involving any two correlated random variables. A special case is the transformation for horizontal wind distributions. Wind statistics are usually provided in terms of wind speed and direction (measured clockwise from north) or in east-west and north-south components. A direct application of this technique allows the determination of appropriate wind statistics parallel and normal to any preselected flight path of a space vehicle. Among the constraints for launching space vehicles are critical values selected from the distribution of the expected winds parallel to and normal to the flight path. These procedures are applied to space vehicle launches at Cape Kennedy, Florida.

Description: The paper reports the results of a conceptual design study of new near-term fuel-conservative aircraft. A parametric study was made to determine the effects of cruise Mach number and fuel cost on the optimum configuration characteristics and relative economic performance. Supercritical wing technology and advanced engine cycles were assumed. For each design, the wing geometry was selected to maximize an economic figure of merit which reflects the potential rate of return on investment. Based on the results of the parametric study, a reduced energy configuration was selected. Compared with existing transport design, the reduced energy design has a higher aspect ratio wing with lower sweep, and cruises at a slightly lower Mach number. It yields about 30% more seat-miles/gal than current wide-body aircraft. At the higher fuel costs anticipated in the future, the reduced energy design has about the same economic performance as existing designs with the same technology level. As an example of a far-term technology application, a design with a composite material wing was also investigated.

Description: A dual star-tracking system and a system including a telescope, an echelle spectrograph, and a SEC vidicon are the chief components of the Balloon-borne Ultraviolet Stellar Spectrograph (BUSS), which has flown four successful missions. The BUSS missions have yielded 81 spectra for 56 stars, recorded with a resolution of 0.1 A in the wavelength range from 2200 to 3400 A. BUSS observations include: profiles of Mg II lines indicating considerable mass flow in early-type supergiants; Mg II features suggesting a cool expanding outer shell above a hotter chromosphere; emission features in Zeta Tau (a shell star) indicating infalling material; and emission features of the Be star Phi Per suggesting mass outflow.

Description: The paper describes the design features and capabilities of a remote sensor that uses solid-state linear arrays and operates in a 'pushbroom' scan mode to provide the required performance. Pushbroom scanning is a term describing the technique of using the forward motion of a satellite platform to sweep a linear array of detectors oriented perpendicular to the ground track across a scene being imaged. One array is typically used for each spectral channel. Satellite motion provides one direction of scan and electronic sampling of the detectors in the crosstrack dimension provides the orthogonal scan component to form an image. The detector array is sampled at the appropriate rate so that contiguous lines are produced. The performance of a pushbroom system is discussed relative to radiometric sensitivity, detector array geometric fidelity, and radiometric correction. System advantages are precision geometric positioning of the detectors, very high sensitivity and favorable SNR, low power consumption, and no moving optics.

Description: The effects of angle of attack on supersonic mixed compression inlet performance at four different locations about a hypothetical forebody are given. A computational method to predict optimum inlet location, orientation, and centerbody control schedule for design and off-design performance is described. The effects of inlet location and a forward canard on the angle-of-attack performance of a normal shock inlet at transonic speeds were studied. Proper integration of inlet location and a forward canard can enhance the angle-of-attack performance of a normal shock inlet. Two lower lip treatments for improving the angle-of-attack performance of rectangular inlets at transonic speeds are discussed.
