In jüngerer Zeit veröffentlichte Untersuchungen von K. C. D. Hickman und D. J. Trevoy1 geben einen Einblick in die Hochvakuum-Verdampfung und Molekular-Destillation, über welche nachfolgend berichtet wird.

    Notes: For a particular sample of polystyrene, different osmometric estimates of Mn have been reported. The possibility that the difference is due, in the one case, to permeation of the membrane by low molecular weight polymer has been carefully considered. It is shown that this can not be the explanation. The difference is in some way associated with chemical differences in the membranes used. Apart from these considerations of error, the significance of the number-average molecular weights of the unfractionated polymers of commerce is shown to be more acutely dependent upon the detail of the low molecular weight end of the distribution than may be realized. The present calculations are based upon a realistic estimate of the low molecular weight polymer content of commercial polymers.

    Thermodynamic Limitations of Ice Accretion Instruments (1953)

    Description: A number of instruments used for determining the supercooled water content of an icing cloud depend on measuring the rate of accretion of ice on an unheated body. It has been shown by Ludlam that, since only part of the supercooled water freezes on impact, and the rest cannot always be frozen by the limited convective and evaporative heat losses which are available, there are limiting water contents beyond which such methods of measurement are unreliable. These limits have been calculated for a rotating cylinder at normal and high flight speeds, and the results show that rotating cylinder measurements are of limited usefulness and may, in fact, prove entirely misleading as regards both water content and droplet size. Experimental results show agreement with the calculated values. The limits for a conventional rotating-disc rate-of-icing meter and for an NAE-Smith ice detector head have also been obtained experimentally. It is concluded that apart from the possibility of using refrigerated ice-accretion instruments, it is necessary to use a thermal method of measuring high values of water concentration, but that an ice-accretion method must also be employed to distinguish between warm water, supercooled water and ice crystals.

    Notes: Zur Darstellung von Dampfdruckkurven wird eine einfache Formel entwickelt, die auch den Verlauf der Ableitung des Dampfdrucks berücksichtigt. Die neue Dampfdruckformel enthält nur zwei (leicht zu bestimmende) Konstanten, deren physikalische Bedeutung angegeben wird. Bei einfachem Aufbau gibt die Formel den weiten Druckbereich zwischen dem kritischen Punkt und etwa dem normalen Siedepunkt ausgezeichnet wieder.

    Notes: Nachdem im ersten Teil das Anheizen flüssigkeitsgefüllter Behälter behandelt wurde, werden nun der Temperaturverlauf und die Wärmeverluste beim Abkühlen derartiger Behälter berechnet. Dabei wird sowohl der Abkühlungsvorgang aus dem stationären Zustand heraus behandelt als auch der Fall, daß vor Erreichen des stationären Zustands die Wärmezufuhr im Innern des Behälters aufhört. Die Resultate für den Abkühlungsvorgang lassen sich ohne neue Schwierigkeiten aus den schon in Teil I gewonnenen Ergebnissen für das Anheizen herleiten. Es wird ferner das Anheizen und die Abkühlung gasgefüllter Behälter untersucht. Zwei Beispiele zeigen die Anwendung der gewonnenen Gleichungen und der daraus entwickelten Diagramme.

    Notes: Zur Beurteilung der Leistungsfähigkeit von Umlaufapparaturen wurde das Siedediagramm des Systems Wasser-Dioxan mit nahe benachbarten Siedepunkten aufgenommen; die berechneten Aktivitätskoeffizienten wurden mit denen aus statischen Messungen verglichen. Außerdem wurden die Apparaturen mit dem System Benzol-Anilin unter extremen Bedingungen geprüft, bei denen die Gleichgewichtseinstellung sehr erschwert ist. Mit der Othmer - Apparatur mit Zusatzheizung und mit der Reinders - Apparatur wurden unter bestimmten Vorsichtsmaßnahmen angenähert übereinstimmende Meßergebnisse auch bei extremen Bedingungen erhalten.

Das entwickelte Gerät, das im Gegensatz zu anderen Bauarten nur eine einzige radial um die Drehachse rotierende Zelle für die Einsatzflüssigkeit besitzt, wird beschrieben. Es ermöglicht bei 84 000 U/min Normalbeschleunigungen von 584 000 g, bei 120 000 U/min und kleineren Präparatmengen von 915 000 g. Besondere Einsätze zur Erfassung des Sediments bringen bei präparativen und möglicherweise auch analytischen Arbeiten besondere Vorteile.
