Abstract:
Summary For studying the isobaric motion of air it is expedient to write the equations of atmospheric dynamics with the variablesx, y, p andt wherex andy express the horizontal co-ordinates,p the pressure andt the time. When the motion of the air is conducted along the isobaric surfaces, then the isobaric divergence of the horizontal field of current is zero, and the vertical component of the absolute isobaric vortex is an invariant of the motion and the equation of the baric tendency is getting the form of an equation of transport. It is possible to establish an equation with partial derivatives of the geopotential of the isobaric surfaces. This equation has a relatively simple form in case of an isobaric motion composed of a permanent zonal flow and an isobaric perturbation. In this particular case we find for the speed of propagation of undulations of the western horizontal current an analogous formula to the one drawn up byRossby, but applicable in this case to a baroclinic atmosphere and an isobaric perturbation.
