Description / Table of Contents:
Summary In the following paper an apparatus is described which allows to measure the vertical intensity of terrestrial magnetism at sea with an accuracy of ±100 γ. The measuring instrument is encased in a stream-line shaped floater free of iron. The floater is towed at a distance of about 100 m from the ship at a depth of about 20 m, in order to prevent disturbances of the measurements by the magnetic field of the ship. As field indicator an electronic tube is employed of which the emission is controlled not by means of a grid but by an exterior magnetic field (“magnetron”). The employed method of measuring the terrestrial field is reduced to measurements of the electric current by moving-coil ammetres with pin-bearings; so the recording instruments can work on board. The instrument for measuring the field in the floating encasement and the measuring apparatus on board are connected by a cable of seven strings.
Notes:
