Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary Derivatives of 18 amino acids with 2-nitroindandion-1,3 have been prepared and analyzed. The optical crystallographic data have been determined for 15 of these new compounds. Photo-micrographs of these nitroindandionates have been made. Several of the compounds prepared did not form crystals of sufficient size to accurately determine all of the optical properties. This condition was especially true with the compounds obtained from arginine, phenylalanine, methionine, and tryptophane. A method of identification of various amino acids based on the optical-crystallographic properties has been proposed. This identification can be carried out on a microscope slide with very small amounts of material. The derivatives of nitroindandion are not entirely satisfactory for identification in several instances because of the high values of the indices and because of the solubility of several of the derivatives.
