Notizen: A model that describes fractionation with condensation and evaporation in a plate-fin device has been formulated. It is capable of evaluating profiles of composition, temperature, and flow rate for both liquid and vapor streams in an extended surface device. The device may be adiabatic or nonadiabatic and the surface may be incompletely wetted. Compared to experimental measurements, the model predictions showed ± 1 number of transfer unit deviation along the length of the device. The predictions of the top and bottom flow rate ratio showed a 5-10% deviation for adiabatic and condensation runs and a 25% deviation for evaporation runs.

Notizen: Biochemical evidence is presented for the autophagic destruction of liver mitochondria in the influenza B virus model of Reye's syndrome in mice. Separation of lysosomes and autophagic vacuoles from mitochondria was accomplished by prior treatment of the mice with Triton WR-1339, resulting in uptake of detergent by these organelles (tritosomes), reducing their densities. The organelles were banded in a discontinuous sucrose gradient. Total protein in the heavy tritosomal fraction increased from 1-2% in controls to 7-8% in virus-treated animals. Ornithine carbamoyl transferase (OCTase), a mitochondrial marker, increased from 2-3% (controls) to 11-15% (virus-treated), and glucose-6-phosphatase, a marker for endoplasmic reticulum, increased from 1-2% (controls) to 8-10% (virus-treated). β-Galactosidase, a soluble enzyme in the lysosome, and OCTase also increase in the cell extract fraction following virus treatment, indicating that there was turnover of heavy lysosomal contents.

Notizen: The amdS gene of A. nidulans has proved extremely favourable for the isolation of mutations affecting gene regulation. Trans-acting regulatory genes involved in amdS induction by small molecular weight effectors have been identified - amdR (ω-amino acids) facB (acetate) and amdA (acetate). Another gene, the areA gene, has properties expected of a major activator gene involved in nitrogen metabolite repression of amdS. All of these regulatory genes are also involved in the control of various other functions encoded by structural genes unlinked to amdS. Mutations in the 5′-region adjacent to amdS have been isolated and allow the identification of independent cis-acting sequences which are the target sites for the regulatory genes. The involvement of these sequences in regulatory product binding has been deduced from titration studies using transformants containing multiple copies of the 5′ sequences. A combination of genetics and molecular analysis is allowing a detailed characterization of this system.

Notizen: A computer-aided graphics approach to correlating transmission electron microscope images of freeze-fractured and thin-sectioned samples is outlined. Any three-dimensional model of the imaged structure can be mathematically sectioned to provide a two-dimensional representation of the model in the “fracture” plane. The method is used to demonstrate that the structure of lamellar liquid crystalline liposomes is based on a family of Dupin cyclides; closed, parallel surfaces with a conjugate ellipse and hyperbola as curvature defects.

Beschreibung: Results of low-speed wind-tunnel investigations are presented for two general aviation configurations: the AVTEK canard configuration and the DeVore conventional configuration. Cooperative research programs were undertaken by industry and NASA to jointly conduct tests in the NASA Langley 12-Foot Low-Speed Wind Tunnel to explore stability and control characteristics of each configuration. A 1/5-scale AVTEK model and a 1/6-scale DeVore model were tested over an angle-of-attack range of up to 45 deg and an angle-of-sideslip range of up to 20 deg. Results from the AVTEK test are presented with an emphasis on the effects of configuration on the stall and poststall characteristics. Results from the DeVore test are presented with emphasis on the effects of wing leading-edge droop design on spin resistance characteristics.

Beschreibung: The continued investigation of the design of Ride Quality Augmentation Systems (RQAS) for commuter aircraft is described. The purpose of these RQAS is the reduction of the vertical and lateral acceleration response of the aircraft due to atmospheric turbulence by the application of active control. The current investigations include the refinement of the sample data feedback control laws based on the control-rate-weighting and output-weighting optimal control design techniqes. These control designs were evaluated using aircraft time simulations driven by Dryden spectra turbulence. Fixed gain controllers were tested throughout the aircrft operating envelope. The preliminary design of the hardware modifications necessary to implement and test the RQAS on a commuter aircraft is included. These include a separate surface elevator and the flap modifications to provide both direct lift and roll control. A preliminary failure mode investigation was made for the proposed configuration. The results indicate that vertical acceleration reductions of 45% and lateral reductions of more than 50% are possible. A fixed gain controller appears to be feasible with only minor response degradation.
