Description: A full-factorial experiment was used to study whether ocean acidification increases mortality in subtidal Mytilus trossulus and subtidal M. galloprovincialis, and intertidal M. trossulus following sub-zero air temperature exposure. We examined physiological processes behind variation in freeze tolerance using 1H NMR metabolomics, analyses of fatty acids, and amino acid composition. This dataset is included in the OA-ICC data compilation maintained in the framework of the IAEA Ocean Acidification International Coordination Centre (see https://oa-icc.ipsl.fr). Original data were downloaded from Zenodo (see Source) by the OA-ICC data curator. In order to allow full comparability with other ocean acidification data sets, the R package seacarb (Gattuso et al, 2024) was used to compute a complete and consistent set of carbonate system variables, as described by Nisumaa et al. (2010). In this dataset the original values were archived in addition with the recalculated parameters (see related PI). The date of carbonate chemistry calculation by seacarb is 2024-05-08.

Description: This dataset contains the relative abundance of isoprenoidal and branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGT) components, in addition to various indexes used to reconstruct the mean annual air temperature and pH, of the Canroute peatland sequence (Massif Central, France) for the last 15,000 years cal BP. The analysis was performed by a double microwave extraction at 70°C with dichloromethane (DCM)-methanol (MeOH) mixture (3:1, v/v), filtered on a solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridge and then separated into polar and apolar fractions on a silica column with a hexane-DCM (1:1, v/v) and DMC-MeOH (1:1, v/v) mixtures respectively. Samples were then analysed in hexane-propanol (98.2:0.2, v/v) by high-performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). Ions in selected ion monitoring (SIM) are detected for mass-to-change ratios according to Hopmans et al. (2016, doi: 10.1016/j.orggeochem.2015.12.006). This data was used to better understand the biological origin of the components and reconstruct the environmental and paleoclimate of the Canroute peatland sequence.

Description: Using a new global compilation of deep-sea 14C/C, we estimated (in Rafter et al. 2022) the average D14C (units of per mil) and 14C ventilation age (units of years) over the last 25,000 years for the deep Pacific, Atlantic, and Southern Oceans. Particularly, we estimated these basin averages for mid-depth waters (between the 27.5 to 28.0 neutral density surfaces) and bottom waters (having a neutral density 〉28.0). These basin averages are calculated using LOESS smoothing, but see the original text for more details. Our reasons for uploading this new data are: (1) An earlier dataset here contained an error for the mid-depth Atlantic; (2) Earlier datasets did not include the trends as D14C values; and (3) Earlier datasets did not include the Raw data (the data before normalization). We have corrected this with the new submission. Please cite the Rafter et al. 2022 when using this dataset.

Description: Sediments were collected with Eckman and Petersen dredges from the bottom of Trout Lake, northern Wisconsin, at 221 stations. Sampling was done with a spud sampler at 32 stations, and core samples were obtained with a Jenkins and Mortimer and a Twenhofel sampler at 17 stations. The shore and offshore deposits of the shores of Trout Lake and the shores of the islands are described. Megascopic descriptions are given of the samples collected with the Eckman and Petersen dredges. Sediments on bottoms of about 10 meters or deeper are mainly gyttja, or crusts composed of mixtures of organic matter, ferric hydroxide, and some form of manganese oxide. The latter deposits are extensive. Detailed descriptions of some of the samples of sands are given, and generalizations respecting size and distribution are made. Tables showing quartiles, medians, and coefficients of sorting and skewness of the coarse sediments collected from the bottom are given in tables. Mechanical analyses of all fine sediments, mainly gyttja, were not made, as previous experience seems to have demonstrated that results have no sedimentational value. Organic matter of the gyttja was determined and also the percentages of lignin in the organic matter. Core samples are composed almost entirely of fine materials, mainly gyttja, and determinations were made on these samples in the same way as on the samples obtained with the Eckman and Petersen dredges. Studies of the core samples show that the fine sediments usually contain in excess of 90 per cent moisture and there is very little change in the moisture content from top to bottom of cores. A map shows the distribution of the iron and manganese deposits. These deposits were found to contain 10 to 20 per cent of organic matter, 11 to 16 per cent of metallic iron, and 12 to 30 per cent of metallic manganese. No stratification of any kind was found in any of the deep-water sediments of Trout Lake except in the iron and manganese crusts. Absence of stratification is considered to be due to the slow rate of deposition and the mixing of sediments by organisms which dwell in them. The data indicate that the rate of deposition in the deep waters of Trout Lake is of the order of 1 foot in 15,000 years.
