Notizen: Summary In a cytophysiological study it was investigated whether in juvenile trout gonadal steroids stimulate the gonadotropic (GTH)-cells directly or indirectly via the brain. Pituitaries of donor animals were transplanted into the caudal musculature of testosterone-treated and non-testosterone-treated host fish. Testosterone treatment caused an increase in GTH-content in the in situ pituitaries and in the grafts. Accordingly, the gonadotrops displayed ultrastructural changes such as the appearance of well-developed Golgi systems and large globules. The stimulation of the morphological development of gonadotrops and of synthesis and storage of GTH in the allografted pituitaries indicates that testosterone affects the GTH-cells directly. In untreated juvenile trout the gonadotropin content of the pituitary and the gonadotropin concentration in the plasma vary with the time of year. This variation and the role of testosterone and gonadotropin-releasing hormone on the release of GTH are discussed.

Notizen: Summary Histochemical techniques applied at the ultrastructural level have established the periplasmic space as the site of cell bound alkaline phosphatase activity inAnabaena cylindrica andCoccochloris peniocytis. For localization of activity unfixed cells were reacted with calcium nitrate, which acts as the initial capture reagent. After this deposition, the cells were suspended in 2% lead nitrate to convert the calcium phosphate to more electron dense lead phosphate. The majority of cell bound activity appeared to be associated with layer 3 of the cell wall. InA. cylindrica a secondary site of cell bound activity appeared to be in the sheath. Placement in a phosphate free medium caused a substantial increase in the enzyme activity ofA. cylindrica while the activity present in log phase cells ofC. peniocytis was similar to that found in phosphate starved cells.C. peniocytis also secretes the enzyme into the surrounding medium.

Notizen: Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 426 was grown aerobically in continuous culture with a mixture of glucose and ethanol as the carbon source. The flows of biomass, glucose, ethanol, oxygen, and carbon dioxide were measured. A model for growth with two substrates was derived. Application of this model to the above-mentioned system yielded values for YATP and P/O. The joint confidence regions for these parameters were calculated. The relevance to industrial production of bakers' yeast is discussed.

Notizen: Summary The differentiation and maturation of monocytes and neutrophil granulocytes were studied in bone marrow of normal mice by electron microscopy and cytochemical assessment of peroxidatic activity. The granule populations of the mature cells of bone marrow were identified and investigated to obtain a basis for the analysis of the earlier stages of maturation. Mature monocytes and neutrophils showed primary and secondary granules, and mature neutrophils had more of both kinds. The size, shape, and number of primary granules proved to offer the most reliable criteria for distinguishing promonocytes and promyelocytes. The primary granules of monocytes were smaller than those of mature neutrophils and were either spherical (smallest diameter 50–200 nm) or elongate (100×400 nm). Both granules had a homogeneous matrix. The granules of the granulocytes were either spherical (smallest diameter 200–300 nm) or elongate (150–200×300–500 nm), and some of them had a crystalline inclusion.
