    Beschreibung: A computational study of solidification of a binary Na2CO3 solution in a horizontal cylindrical annulus is performed using a continuum formulation with a control-volume based, finite-difference scheme. The initial conditions were selected to facilitate the study of counter thermal and solutal convection, accompanied by extensive mushy region growth. Numerical results are compared with experimental data with mixed success. Qualitative agreement is obtained for the overall solidification process and associated physical phenomena. However, the plume thickness calculated for the solutally-driven convective upflow is substantially smaller than the observed value. Evolution of double-diffusive layers is predicted, but over a time scale much smaller than that observed experimentally. Good agreement is obtained between predicted and measured results for solid growth, but the mushy region thickness is significantly overpredicted.

    Beschreibung: The goal of this project was to investigate the feasibility of developing useful low order dynamical systems to allow one to determine cheaply the effect of various initial conditions on the evolution of mixing layers. A mathematically rigorous approach for a time evolving base flow as found in a mixing layer seems to be the singular value decomposition of the linear operator transforming some initial perturbations into the solution at a given later time. Unfortunately, this is very costly, if at all feasible, and only deals with the linear evolution of a disturbance. A different approach based on weakly nonlinear analysis was attempted, but numerous difficulties were encountered. Several formulations were proposed which may be ill-posed. The reasons for this possible failure of the attempted approach is related to the fundamental limitations of weakly nonlinear analysis. The clarification of these issues is attempted in this report.

    Beschreibung: One-point and two-point exponential functions have been developed and proved to be very effective approximations of structural response. The exponential has been compared to the linear, reciprocal and quadratic fit methods. Four test problems in structural analysis have been selected. The use of such approximations is attractive in structural optimization to reduce the numbers of exact analyses which involve computationally expensive finite element analysis.

    Beschreibung: A hybrid numerical technique, based on local application of continuum and particle methods, is applied to the one-dimensional normal shock structure in a monatomic gas. The methods are coupled iteratively via a flux boundary condition in a region where both are applicable. The validity of each method through the shock structure is quantified. The physical and numerical aspects of coupling are discussed and a variety of coupling methods are assessed. Results are presented to show the improvement in computational efficiency available via the hybrid approach.

    Beschreibung: Turbulent sudden expansion flows are of significant theoretical and practical importance. Such flows have been the subject of extensive analytical and experimental study for decades, but many issues are still unresolved. Detailed information on reacting sudden expansion flows is very limited, since suitable measurement techniques have only been available in recent years. The present study of reacting flow in an axisymmetric sudden expansion was initiated under NASA support in December 1983. It is an extension of a reacting flow program which has been carried out with Air Force support under Contract F33615-81-K-2003. Since the present effort has just begun, results are not yet available. Therefore a brief overview of results from the Air Force program will be presented to indicate the basis for the work to be carried out.

    Beschreibung: Transient vibration test criteria, developed for spacecraft hardware, provide a test rationale to verify the capability of the hardware to withstand the low and mid frequency transient vibration environments induced by launch vehicle events. A test method, consisting of a series of discrete frequency, limited cycle, modulated sine wave pulses, was developed to avoid the slow swept sine drawbacks, yet provide a repeatable test that would excite all frequencies. The shape of the waveform is that of the classic response of the mass of a one degree of freedom system when it is base-excited by an exponentially decayed sine wave transient. Criteria were developed to define pulse amplitudes, shapes, and center frequencies from spacecraft loads analyses. Test tolerance criteria were also developed and specified. The transient vibration test criteria were implemented on spacecraft flight hardware and provided a more realistic test simulation (i.e., less conservative) for qualification of spacecraft hardware without risk of undertest.

    Beschreibung: An analogy between the mathematical modeling of transonic potential flow and the flow in a cavitating bearing is described. Based on the similarities, characteristics of the cavitated region and jump conditions across the film reformation and rupture fronts are developed using the method of weak solutions. The mathematical analogy is extended by utilizing a few computational concepts of transonic flow to numerically model the cavitating bearing. Methods of shock fitting and shock capturing are discussed. Various procedures used in transonic flow computations are adapted to bearing cavitation applications, for example, type differencing, grid transformation, an approximate factorization technique, and Newton's iteration method. These concepts have proved to be successful and have vastly improved the efficiency of numerical modeling of cavitated bearings.

    Beschreibung: Spectral methods for compressible flows are introduced in relation to finite difference and finite element techniques within the framework of the method of weighted residuals. Current spectral collocation methods are put in historical context. The basic concepts of both Fourier and Chebyshev spectral collocation methods are provided. Filtering strategies for both shock-fitting and shock-capturing approaches are also presented. Fourier shock capturing techniques are evaluated using a one-dimensional, periodic astrophysical 'nozzle' problem. Examples of shock-fitting approaches include a shock/acoustic wave interaction, shock/vortex interaction, and the classical blunt body problem. While the shock capturing spectral method does not yet show a clear advantage over second-order finite differences, equivalent accuracy can be obtained using shock fitting with far fewer grid points.

    Beschreibung: Three airfoil data sets were selected for use in evaluating currently available analytical models for predicting airfoil surface heat transfer distributions in a 2-D flow field. Two additional airfoils, representative of highly loaded, low solidity airfoils currently being designed, were selected for cascade testing at simulated engine conditions. Some 2-D analytical methods were examined and a version of the STAN5 boundary layer code was chosen for modification. The final form of the method utilized a time dependent, transonic inviscid cascade code coupled to a modified version of the STAN5 boundary layer code featuring zero order turbulence modeling. The boundary layer code is structured to accommodate a full spectrum of empirical correlations addressing the coupled influences of pressure gradient, airfoil curvature, and free-stream turbulence on airfoil surface heat transfer distribution and boundary layer transitional behavior. Comparison of pedictions made with the model to the data base indicates a significant improvement in predictive capability.
