Notizen: A variety of experiments have been performed on the TFTR tokamak [Wilson et al., Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1988 (IAEA, Vienna, 1989), Vol. 1, p. 691] utilizing ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) heating. Of special interest has been the insight into plasma performance gained by utilizing a different heating scheme other than the usual neutral beam injection (NBI). Utilizing ICRF heating allows control over the power deposition profile independent of the plasma fueling profile. In addition, by varying the minority concentration the power split between ion and electron heating can be varied. Confinement has been examined in high recycling gas fueled discharges, low recycling supershot plasmas, and peaked density pellet fueled discharges. Global confinement is found not to be affected by the method or localization of plasma heating, but the calculated local diffusivities vary with the power deposition profile to yield similar global values. In addition, sawtooth stabilization observed with ICRF heating has been investigated and found to occur in qualitative agreement with theory. ICRF sawtooth stabilized discharges exhibit peaked temperature and density profiles and have a safety factor q that appears to fall well below unity on axis.

Notizen: Bismuth-doped lutetium iron garnet (BLIG) is an important material for implementation of the interaction between magnetostatic waves and optical guided modes. Sodium oxide is suggested to reduce the viscosity of the lead-free melt used for liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) growth of the films, improving flux removal. The effect of the incorporation of sodium into the garnet lattice on the important magnetic and magneto-optic properties is studied, using yttrium iron garnet as a model system. Negligible effect on the Faraday rotation and magnetostatic wave passband is noted. The uniaxial anisotropy field is affected in the negative direction by a growth induced anisotropy due to sodium inclusion, but this effect may be removed by annealing.

Notizen: Experiments with coaxial plasma guns at currents in excess of ten megamperes have resulted in the production of high-voltage pulses (0.5 MV) and hard x radiation (10–200 keV). The x-radiation pulse occurs substantially after the high-voltage pulse suggesting that high-energy electrons are generated by dynamic processes in a very high speed ((approximately-greater-than)106 m/s), magnetized plasma flow. Such flows, which result from acceleration of relatively low-density plasma (10−4 vs 1.0 kg/m3) by magnetic fields of 20–30 T, support high voltages by the back electromotive force-u×B during the opening switch phase of the plasma flow switch. A simple model of classical ion slowing down and subsequent heating of background electrons can explain spectral evidence of 30-keV electron temperatures in fully stripped aluminum plasma formed from plasma flows of 1–2 × 106 m/s. Similar modeling and spectral evidence indicates tungsten ion kinetic energies of 4.5 MeV and 46 keV electron temperatures of a highly stripped tungsten plasma.

Notizen: Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) and spontaneous Raman spectroscopy have been used to obtain vibrational spectra of shock-compressed and static high-pressure fluid nitrogen, respectively. Vibrational frequencies were obtained from the CARS data using a semiclassical model for these spectra. Spontaneous Raman vibrational frequencies were determined by fitting data using a Lorentz-shape line. A functional form was found for the dependence of the vibrational frequency on pressure and temperature to 40 GPa and 5000 K, respectively. By fitting the vibrational data to this form, a pressure scale based on the fluid nitrogen vibron has been calibrated for use at very high temperature. The nitrogen vibron pressure scale was used to determine the fluid-δ nitrogen phase boundary up to 20 GPa and 900 K.

Notizen: We consider in the present paper the quantum-mechanical effects on the equilibrium and dynamical behavior of low-temperature rare-gas clusters. Using a combination of ground-state and finite-temperature Monte Carlo methods, we examine the properties of small (2–7 particles) neon clusters. We find that the magnitude of the equilibrium quantum-mechanical effects in these systems is significant. The present studies also suggest that the low-temperature dynamics of these rare-gas systems is appreciably nonclassical.

Notizen: We report the first study of the room-temperature electroabsorption effects in CdZnTe/ZnTe multiple quantum well structures which exhibit sharp excitonic absorption peaks. The magnitude of the Franz Keldysh and quantum-confined Stark Effects are found to be comparable to those of III-V semiconductors. With optimized structures we expect II-VI semiconductors to be important components for information processing in the visible spectrum.

Notizen: The structure of YBa2Cu3Ox thin films and YBa2Cu3Ox/PrBa2Cu3Ox superlattice films grown on (00L) SrTiO3 substrates has been studied using x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The films consist of four symmetry-equivalent domains related by mutually perpendicular (hh0) and (hh¯0) twin boundaries. One twin orientation is often highly favored over the other. We have correlated this in-plane symmetry breaking with small miscuts of the substrate surface towards the [HH0] direction and propose that interfacial steps act as nucleation sites for twins. Thus, by controlling the surface normal, a technique is described for producing films containing aligned twin boundaries.

Notizen: A self-consistent critical current model in the Josephson mixed state is proposed for a series of c-oriented, polycrystalline and for a series of epitaxial triaxially oriented YBCO thin films. The flux pinning activation energies were experimentally determined from electrical transport measurements over a wide range of temperatures and were found to behave quite differently for the two types of granular film. With these activation energies applied to a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor weak-link system, thermally activated flux motion is shown to reproduce the experimentally measured critical current densities.

Notizen: Recent operation of the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Plasma Phys. Controlled Nucl. Fusion Research 1, 51 (1986)] has produced plasma equilibria with values of Λ≡βp eq+li/2 as large as 7, εβp dia≡2μ0ε〈p⊥〉/〈〈Bp〉〉2 as large as 1.6, and Troyon normalized diamagnetic beta [Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 26, 209 (1984); Phys. Lett. 110A, 29 (1985)], βNdia≡108〈βt⊥〉aB0/Ip as large as 4.7. When εβp dia(approximately-greater-than)1.25, a separatrix entered the vacuum chamber, producing a naturally diverted discharge that was sustained for many energy confinement times, τE. The largest values of εβp and plasma stored energy were obtained when the plasma current was ramped down prior to neutral beam injection. The measured peak ion and electron temperatures were as large as 24 and 8.5 keV, respectively. Plasma stored energy in excess of 2.5 MJ and τE greater than 130 msec were obtained. Confinement times of greater than 3 times that expected from L-mode predictions have been achieved. The fusion power gain QDD reached a value of 1.3×10−3 in a discharge with Ip=1 MA and εβp dia=0.85. A large, sustained negative loop voltage during the steady-state portion of the discharge indicates that a substantial noninductive component of Ip exists in these plasmas. Transport code analysis indicates that the bootstrap current constitutes up to 65% of Ip. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) ballooning stability analysis shows that, while these plasmas are near, or at the βp limit, the pressure gradient in the plasma core is in the first region of stability to high-n modes.

Notizen: In the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 26, 11 (1984)], the highest neutron source strength Sn and D–D fusion power gain QDD are realized in the neutral-beam-fueled and heated "supershot'' regime that occurs after extensive wall conditioning to minimize recycling. For the best supershots, Sn increases approximately as P1.8b. The highest-Q shots are characterized by high Te (up to 12 keV), Ti (up to 34 keV), and stored energy (up to 4.7 MJ), highly peaked density profiles, broad Te profiles, and lower Zeff. Replacement of critical areas of the graphite limiter tiles with carbon-fiber composite tiles and improved alignment with the plasma have mitigated the "carbon bloom.'' Wall conditioning by lithium pellet injection prior to the beam pulse reduces carbon influx and particle recycling. Empirically, QDD increases with decreasing pre-injection carbon radiation, and increases strongly with density peakedness [ne(0)/〈ne〉] during the beam pulse. To date, the best fusion results are Sn=5×1016 n/sec, QDD=1.85×10−3, and neutron yield=4.0×1016 n/pulse, obtained at Ip=1.6–1.9 MA and beam energy Eb=95–103 keV, with nearly balanced co- and counter-injected beam power. Computer simulations of supershot plasmas show that typically 50%–60% of Sn arises from beam–target reactions, with the remainder divided between beam–beam and thermonuclear reactions, the thermonuclear fraction increasing with Pb. The simulations predict that QDT=0.3–0.4 would be obtained for the best present plasma conditions, if half the deuterium neutral beams were to be replaced by tritium beams. Somewhat higher values are calculated if D beams are injected into a predominantly tritium target plasma. The projected central beta of fusion alphas is 0.4%–0.6%, a level sufficient for the study of alpha-induced collective effects.
