    Notes: A study has been made of the structure and properties of alternating equimolar and random copolymers of vinylcyclohexanne and α-methylvinylcyclohexane with acrylonitrile using infrared and 1H-NMR spectroscopy methods, as well as x-ray diffraction and differential thermal analyses. The spectral methods allowed an estimation of the composition and distribution of comonomer units in the copolymer macrochains. The thermal stability of alternating copolymers was found to be higher than that of polyacrylonitrile. Alternating and random copolymers are amorphous products with various dimensions of crystallites. Information on the molecular motion intensity and temperatures of structural transitions in copolymer macrochains was obtained by the spin-probe technique.

    Notes: Acrylonitrile (AN) was graft-polymerized onto gelatinized cationic starch (CS) possessing diethylaminoethyl ether groups by cerium (IV) initiation to give stable latexlike copolymer dispersions. Dispersions of the latex copolymers, having up to 50% grafted polyacrylonitrile (PAN), air- and heat-dry on glass to clear, adhesive films. Sonification of up to 8% dispersions at 20 Khz reduced their viscosities from 1500-3000 cP to 15-40 cP. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that both nonsonified and sonified dispersions consist of ball-like particles measuring about 0.05-0.15 μ in diameter when dry. The films are formed by coalescence of these particles. The degree to which AN grafts onto CS at ambient temperature is related to the nitrogen content of CS, gelatinization time of CS at 95°C, sequence of AN and cerium(IV) addition, concentration of cerium (IV), concentration of AN, and severity of reaction agitation. Number-average molecular weight values of PAN were about 106 when grafting was conducted under stirring and about 5 × 105 when conducted under shaking action.

    Notes: Measurements of translational diffusion coefficients by quasielastic laser light scattering, sedimentation coefficients, and intrinsic viscosities at zero shear of proteoglycan subunit fraction A1-D1-D1 isolated from bovine nasal septa are reported. Molecular weights and hydrodynamic dimensions are compared with those expected on the basis of structural models previously proposed. Comparison of the concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficient in the presence of NaCl and GdnHCl leads to the conclusion that significant self-association behaviour of subunit occurs in the absence of GdnHCl. In the absence of added salt, anomalous nonlinear concentration dependence of Dt estimated from wide-angle light-scattering experiments is observed. In addition, Dt apparently becomes angle dependent. These results are interpreted in terms of the perturbation of normal translational diffusion of the monomer by strong repulsive intermolecular interactions due to the combined effects of long-range electrostatic forces and macromolecular congestion at higher concentrations. By carrying out experiments at small scattering angles, it is possible to determine Dt0 for proteoglycan subunit in the absence of supporting electrolyte. Titration of a dilute solution of subunit with hyaluronic acid results in a sigmoidal behaviour of the Stokes radius, indicating the formation of complexes of higher molecular weight results from the noncovalent association of proteoglycan subunits with hyaluronate. Observation of Dt appears to provide a useful method for studying the proteoglycan subunit-hyaluronate interactions.

    Notes: Viscosity measurements made by a cone-plate viscometer on polyisobutylene in decalin solutions at different concentrations and their corresponding glass bead suspensions with filler loadings up to 40% by volume are reported. The range of shear rate $ \dot \gamma $ investigated is between 0.1 and 1000 sec-1. The solutions show shear-thinning behavior, and the relative viscosity ηr of the slurries generally decreases with increasing shear rate. The results indicate two different types of mechanism, respectively at high and low shear rates. At low $ \dot \gamma $, the relative viscosity can be correlated extending relations already well known for suspensions in Newtonian liquids which are based on the mechanism of aggregate disruption. The behavior at high $ \dot \gamma $ values is believed to be due to the influence of the filler on the flow properties of macromolecules, in particular on relaxation time. Through a shifting procedure, an increase in relaxation time which depends on filler content and not on polymer concentration is shown.

    Notes: A cell model for the prediction of temperature and concentration gradients in a nonisothermal tubular polymerization reactor at steady state is presented. Both radial and longitudinal gradients are considered. The complete molecular weight distribution is calculated as well as the leading moments of the distribution. The model is easily reduced to predict the performance of a plug-flow tubular reactor, batch reactor, and continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The specific polymerization mechanism application consists of free-radical initiation, propagation, and combination termination.

    Notes: Internal reflectance Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra of tetraglycidyl diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) cured with diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) obtained before and after exposure to the combined effect of stress, elevated temperature, and moisture (STM), elevated temperature and moisture (TM), or stress and elevated temperature (ST) environments were used to search for evidence of irreversible chemical changes in epoxy resins. These changes were compared with the infrared changes observed during the late stages of curing. The infrared intensities of the bands attributed to the sulfone group are sensitive to chemical changes and moisture content, which suggests their potential use as molecular monitors within the epoxy network. The results of eight experimental series provide spectroscopic evidence indicating that exposure of epoxy specimens to STM and TM environments that greatly exceed anticipated service conditions results in detectable rupture of chemical bonds in the polymer network. The extent of bond rupture is independent of the applied stress in the 0-90 kg/cm2 range. Internal swelling stresses are therefore believed responsible for the observed bond cleavages. Spectral evidence indicates that postcure reactions are the most prominent chemical changes induced by exposure of epoxy specimens to the ST, SM, M, and T environments.

    Notes: Transport properties were determined for various Loeb-type membranes which exhibit strong structure differences from one to another. Using linear relations of thermodynamics of irreversible processes for the homogeneous ones, correlations were found between the specific transport coefficients and the states of water in the membrane medium. In the case of heterogeneous membranes a schematic multilayer model, using in an appropriate way Darcy's law, was worked out in accordance with electron micrographs of membrane cross sections. It enables us to correlate the membrane hydraulic permeability with the relative extent of four typical structures A, B, C, and D. In addition, this model provides both the hydraulic specific permeabilities of these types of structure and their hydration characteristics.

    Notes: Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene is now extensively used in total joint replacements, and there is ample clinical evidence that this material wears at a significant rate in such applications. Six commercially available total hip replacements were subjected to an accurate simulation of clinical mechanical and chemical conditions, and the wear behavior of the polyethylene components was analyzed by friction coefficient measurements and scanning electron micrography of the wear surfaces. The results indicate that all of the proposed wear mechanisms excepting adhesive and abrasive wear may be eliminated. It is highly likely that abrasion fatigue and related phenomena are central to the wear process in many prostheses, but the wear process may be ultimately determined in many cases by the type of defects present in the manufactured material.
