    Notes: We present the results of a study of the structure of a parallel compressible mixing layer in a binary mixture of gases. The gases included in this study are hydrogen (H2), helium (He), nitrogen (N2), oxygen (O2), neon (Ne) and argon (Ar). Profiles of the variation of the Lewis and Prandtl numbers across the mixing layer for all 30 combinations of gases are given. It is shown that the Lewis number can vary by as much as a factor of 8 and the Prandtl number by a factor of 2 across the mixing layer. Thus assuming constant values for the Lewis and Prandtl numbers of a binary gas mixture in the shear layer, as is done in many theoretical studies, is a poor approximation. We also present profiles of the velocity, mass fraction, temperature and density for representative binary gas mixtures at zero and supersonic Mach numbers. We show that the shape of these profiles is strongly dependent on which gases are in the mixture as well as on whether the denser gas is in the fast stream or the slow stream. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Resource polymorphism in vertebrates is generally underappreciated as a diversifying force and is probably more common than is currently recognized. Research across diverse taxa suggest they may play important roles in population divergence and speciation. They may involve various kinds of traits, including morphological and behavioral traits and those related to life history. Many of the evolutionary, ecological, and genetic mechanisms producing and maintaining resource polymorphisms are similar among phylogenetically distinct species. Although further studies are needed, the genetic basis may be simple, in some cases under the control of a single locus, with phenotypic plasticity playing a proximate role in some taxa. Divergent selection including either directional, disruptive, or frequency-dependent selection is important in their evolution. Generally, the invasion of "open" niches or underutilized resources requiring unique trophic characters and decreased interspecific competition have promoted the evolution of resource polymorphisms. Further investigations centered on their role in speciation, especially adaptive radiation, are likely to be fruitful.

    Notes: Hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL) is widely used as a model protein, although its purity has not been adequately characterized by modern biochemical techniques. We have identified and quantified the protein heterogeneities in three commercial HEWL preparations by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis with enhanced silver staining, reversed-phase fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) and immunoblotting with comparison to authentic protein standards. Depending on the source, the contaminating proteins totalled 1–6%(w/w) and consisted of ovotransferrin, ovalbumin, HEWL dimers, and polypeptides with approximate Mr of 39 and 18 kDa. Furthermore, we have obtained gram quantities of electrophoretically homogeneous [〉 99.9%(w/w)] HEWL by single-step semi-preparative scale cation-exchange FPLC with a yield of about 50%. Parallel studies of crystal growth kinetics, salt repartitioning and crystal perfection with this highly purified material showed fourfold increases in the growth-step velocities and significant enhancement in the structural homogeneity of HEWL crystals.

    Notes: Nonuniform precipitant and impurity incorporation in protein crystals can cause lattice strain and, thus, possibly decrease the X-ray diffraction resolution. To address this issue, a series of crystallization experiments were carried out, in which initial supersaturation, NaCl concentration, protein purity level and crystallized fraction were varied. Lysozyme and protein impurities, as well as sodium and chloride were independently determined in the initial solution, supernatant and crystals. The segregation coefficients for Na+ and Cl− were found to be independent of supersaturation and NaCl concentration, and decreased with crystallized fraction/crystal size. Numerical evaluation of the extensive body of data, based on a nucleation-growth-repartitioning model, suggests a core of \sim40 µm in which salt is incorporated in much greater concentrations than during later growth. Small crystals containing higher amounts of incorporated NaCl also had higher protein impurity contents. This suggests that the excess salt is associated with the protein impurities in the core. X-ray topography revealed strain fields in the center of the crystals comparable in size to the inferred core. The growth rates of crystals smaller than 30–40 µm in size were consistently 1.5–2 times lower than those of larger crystals, presumably due to higher chemical potentials in the core.

    Notes: For old Taiwan-hands, the island's traffic serves as the best metaphor for society there: it lurches between extremes of Hobbesian chaos and paralysis. Drivers either rush frenetically with little regard for others or get stuck in traffic jams of epic proportions, all the time emitting dangerous pollutants into the air everyone must breathe. A superhighway may have six carefully demarcated lanes, but at any time there seems to be a minimum of ten discernible streams of traffic, as vehicles weave in and out, honking, bullying, dodging and frequently colliding. A frontier ethos still rules in this parvenu society, where 25 years ago motorcycles began to replace bicycles, and now privately-owned cars including all the priciest prestige models from around the world, are ubiquitous, riding and parking wherever their drivers feel able to stake out a claim. Sometimes it seems as if everyone is on the move, or trying to move, unwilling to yield to others, treating strangers with shocking incivility.

    Notes: Abstract The project on Biodiversity Uncertainties and Research Needs (BURN) ensures the advancement of usable knowledge on biodiversity by obtaining input from decision makers on their priority information needs about biodiversity and then using this input to engage leading scientists in designing policy-relevant research. Decision makers articulated concerns related to four issues: significance of biodiversity; status and trends of biodiversity; management for biodiversity; and the linkage of social, cultural, economic, legal, and biological objectives. Leading natural and social scientists then identified the research required to address the decision makers' needs and determined the probability of success. The diverse group of experts reached consensus on several fundamental issues, helping to clarify the role of biodiversity in land and resource management. The BURN participants identified several features that should be incorporated into policy-relevant research plans and management strategies for biodiversity. Research and assessment efforts should be: multidisciplinary and integrative, participatory with stakeholder involvement, hierarchical (multiple scales), and problem- and region-specific. The activities should be focused regionally within a global perspective. Meta-analysis of existing data is needed on all fronts to assess the state of the science. More specifically, the scientists recommended six priority research areas that should be pursued to address the information needs articulated by decision makers: (1) characterization of biodiversity, (2) environmental valuation, (3) management for sustainability—for humans and the environment (adaptive management), (4) information management strategies, (5) governance and stewardship issues, and (6) communication and outreach. Broad recommendations were developed for each research area to provide direction for research planning and resource management strategies. The results will directly benefit those groups that require biodiversity research to address their needs—whether to develop policy, manage natural resources, or make other decisions affecting biodiversity.
