    Description: Effective monitoring is an essential part of identifying and mitigating volcanic hazards. In the submarine environment this is more difficult than onshore because observations are typically limited to land-based seismic networks and infrequent shipboard surveys. Since the first recorded eruption in 1939, the Kick-‘em-Jenny (KeJ) volcano, located 8km off northern Grenada, has been the source of 13 episodes of T-phase signals. These distinctive seismic signals, often coincident with heightened body-wave seismicity, are interpreted as extrusive eruptions. They have occurred with a recurrence interval of around a decade, yet direct confirmation of volcanism has been rare. By conducting new bathymetric surveys in 2016 and 2017 and reprocessing 4 legacy datasets spanning 30 years we present a clearer picture of the development of KeJ through time. Processed grids with a cell size of 5m and vertical precision on the order of 1-4m allow us to correlate T-phase episodes with morphological changes at the volcano's edifice. In the time-period of observation 7.09x10 6 m 3 of material has been added through constructive volcanism – yet 5 times this amount has been lost through landslides. Limited recent magma production suggests that KeJ may be susceptible to larger eruptions with longer repeat times than have occurred during the study interval, behavior more similar to sub-aerial volcanism in the arc than previously thought. T-phase signals at KeJ have a varied origin and are unlikely to be solely the result of extrusive submarine eruptions. Our results confirm the value of repeat swath bathymetry surveys in assessing submarine volcanic hazards.

    Description: We report results of 13 C/ 12 C, 18 O/ 16 O, and 13 C- 18 O “clumped” isotope analyses from a series of calcite precipitation experiments from aqueous solutions under laboratory conditions. Chemo-stat precipitation experiments were performed to synthetically form calcite from aqueous solution onto 43 Ca-labeled calcite seed crystals. Formation rate was controlled during the experiments to investigate the effect of precipitation rate and temperature on 13 C- 18 O bonding in calcite, where rates ranged from 10 −6.88 to 10 −8.20 mol m −2 s −1 at three temperatures (10, 20, and 30°C). No relation was observed between precipitation rate and 13 C- 18 O bonding proportion over the range of precipitation rates used. The relation between Δ 47 and temperature produced was: (1) Comparing solution conditions across multiple experimental data sets indicates an inverse relation between saturation state and 13 C- 18 O bonding, where high super-saturation conditions are likely to be furthest from equilibrium 13 C- 18 O partitioning. Carbon fractionation factors between calcite and HCO 3 - (aq) were found to be a temperature independent value of +1.6‰. Measured 18 O/ 16 O fractionation factors, yield a temperature relation of: (2) The temperature-dependent calcite-water 18 O/ 16 O fractionation relation determined in this study is slightly different (larger α calcite-H2O value) than those measured in several previous investigations. Significantly, we observe a dependence of the 18 O/ 16 O isotope fractionation factor on growth rate. Taken together, these findings suggest carbonate growth in our experiments approached equilibrium more closely than previous experiments of this type.

    Description: Studying the older volcanic centers on Montserrat, Centre Hills and Silver Hills, may reveal how volcanic activity can change over long time periods (≥1 Myr), and whether the recent activity at the Soufrière Hills is typical of volcanism throughout Montserrat's history. Here, we present the first detailed mapping of the Silver Hills, the oldest and arguably least studied volcanic center on Montserrat. Volcanism at the Silver Hills was dominated by episodic andesite lava dome growth and collapse, produced Vulcanian style eruptions, and experienced periodic sector collapse events, similar to the style of volcanic activity that has been documented for the Centre Hills and Soufrière Hills. We also present an updated geochronology of volcanism on Montserrat, by revising existing ages and obtaining new 40 Ar/ 39 Ar dates and palaeomagnetic ages from marine tephra layers. We show that the centers of the Silver, Centre, and Soufrière Hills were active during at least ∼2.17–1.03 Ma, ∼1.14–0.38 Ma, and ∼0.45 Ma–present, respectively. Combined with timings of volcanism on Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe these ages suggest that ∼0.5–1 Ma is a common lifespan for volcanic centers in the Lesser Antilles. These new dates identify a previously unrecognized overlap in activity between the different volcanic centers, which appears to be a common phenomenon in island arcs. We also identify an older stage of Soufrière Hills activity ∼450–290 ka characterized by the eruption of hornblende-orthopyroxene-phyric lavas, demonstrating that the petrology of the Soufrière Hills eruptive products has changed at least twice throughout the volcano's development.

    Description: Lithospheric plates move over the low viscosity asthenosphere balancing several forces, which generate plate motions. We use a global 3D lithosphere-asthenosphere model (SLIM3D) with visco-elasto-plastic rheology coupled to a spectral model of mantle flow at a 300 km depth to quantify the influence of intra-plate friction and asthenospheric viscosity on plate velocities. We account for the brittle-ductile deformation at plate boundaries (yield stress) using a plate boundary friction coefficient to predict the present-day plate motion and net rotation of the lithospheric plates. Previous modeling studies have suggested that small friction coefficients (μ 〈 0.1, yield stress ∼100 MPa) can lead to plate tectonics in models of mantle convection. Here we show that in order to match the observed present-day plate motion and net rotation, the frictional parameter must be less than 0.05. We obtain a good fit with the magnitude and orientation of the observed plate velocities (NUVEL-1A) in a no-net-rotation (NNR) reference frame with μ 〈 0.04 and a minimum asthenosphere viscosity of ∼5·10 19 Pas to 10 20 Pas. Our estimates of net rotation (NR) of the lithosphere suggest that amplitudes ∼0.1-0.2 (°/Ma), similar to most observation-based estimates, can be obtained with asthenosphere viscosity cutoff values of ∼10 19 Pas to 5·10 19 Pas and friction coefficients μ 〈 0.05.

    Description: Scanning precession electron diffraction is an emerging promising technique for mapping phases and crystal orientations with short acquisition times (10-20 ms/pixel) in a transmission electron microscope similarly to the Electron Backscattered Diffraction (EBSD) or Transmission Kikuchi Diffraction (TKD) techniques in a scanning electron microscope. In this study we apply this technique to the characterization of deformation microstructures in an aggregate of bridgmanite and ferropericlase deformed at 27 GPa and 2130 K. Such a sample is challenging for microstructural characterization for two reasons: (i) the bridgmanite is very unstable under electron irradiation, (ii) under high stress conditions, the dislocation density is so large that standard characterization by diffraction contrast are limited, or impossible. Here we show that detailed analysis of intracrystalline misorientations sheds some light on the deformation mechanisms of both phases. In bridgmanite, deformation is accommodated by localized, amorphous, shear deformation lamellae whereas ferropericlase undergoes large strains leading to grain elongation in response to intense dislocation activity with no evidence for recrystallisation. Plastic strain in ferropericlase can be semi-quantitatively assessed by following kernel average misorientation distributions.

    Description: Changes in the Earth's magnetic field have global significance that reach from the outer core extending out to the uppermost atmosphere. Paleomagnetic records derived from sedimentary and volcanic sequences provide important insights into the geodynamo processes that govern the largest geomagnetic changes (polarity reversals), but dating uncertainties have hindered progress in this understanding. Here we report a paleomagnetic record from multiple lava flows on Tahiti that bracket the Matuyama-Brunhes (M-B) polarity reversal ∼771 thousand years ago. Our high-precision 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages constrain several rapid and short-lived changes in field orientation up to 33,000 years prior to the M-B reversal. These changes are similar to ones identified in other less well-dated lava flows in Maui, Chile and La Palma that occurred during an extended period of reduced field strength recorded in sediments. We use a simple stochastic model to show that these rapid polarity changes are highly attenuated in sediment records with low sedimentation rates. This prolonged 33,000-year period of reduced field strength and increased geomagnetic instability supports models that show frequent centennial-to-millennial scale polarity changes in the presence of a strongly weakened dipole field.
